Greetings from Vancouver, BC
« on: July 19, 2011, 11:17:33 AM »
Hello everyone,

I'm excited to join this community of E-P1 (& Co) enthusiasts. I bought mine a couple of years ago and am extremely glad I did. A professional photographer friend introduced me to it only months after its release. It wasn't long before I went on ebay, found one with a pancake lens at a great price, bid on it and got it. Only my second digital camera, but my first serious one after my good old Nikon FE conked out. I've used it a fair bit since I got it, but here is a question that I haven't been able to resolve yet: when using macro photography on small-ish objects the camera always has a difficult time focussing, likely due to the subject being so small. Can anybody suggest some ways around this? Or am I doing something wrong altogether?

Thanks!

Welcome nico:

To your Q, try [center point AF] instead of multi-point. that may help.. You can always use Manual Focus, and use the magnified view as a help.

A fellow Vancouverite!  :)  Welcome to the forum!

The E-P1 has been criticized for having "too large" of a focus area, even when a single focus point is selected. If  you're trying to photograph a really small object, there is a chance the camera will fail to focus correctly, even when you place the focus point directly over your object. If this happens, then your only choice is to either move in closer (if possible), or switch to manual focus (or the S-AF/M option, which lets you manually refine the focus after AF has done its job). If you're using a zoom lens, zoom in and lock focus, then zoom back out. (This doesn't work so well in low light though.)
