« on: October 01, 2011, 08:29:40 PM »
hello ladies and gents,

I am a total noob to photography. Today i just bout the E-PM1 and will be taking it on my trip to Hawaii tomorrow. Is there a tutorial on photography and how to use micro 4/3 cams? I will be on an airplane for about 5 hrs so i have lots of time to read and mess with the cam.

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome,

Not sure I can help with the tutorial you need, I generally got to know the tech details by reading the great Wikipedia articles:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Photography

There is also a great set of links about composition here:

http://e-p1.net/beginners-corner/i-need-a-good-read-about-composition/

The main thing you should learn is that you should not hate your camera or photography in general because your photos do not turn so good at the beginning.

BTW, moving it to "Welcome to the forum" category.

Cambridge in color is the best starting point, after the instruction manual of course. Read that thing thoroughly!
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

every time i get a new camera with a new a new feature set im a noob for a while too....its totally fun and novel

enjoy that cool camera , it packs amazing image quality into a small camera,.... i would try to always review and enlarge your first few shots in any new shooting l situiation to insure that focus area is correct ,sharpness and exposure is right etc
you dont wanna snap away and think your shots are sharp, only to review later and be dissapointed

remember iso is your friend... boosting it up to 1600 or 3200 when its dark or shutters speed is otherwise too slow for your needs is ok.... but for daytime ,keep your iso low for best iq like iso 200 for the best image quality, aldo make sure your settings are correct , look to make sure your record resolution is the highest pixel count, you almoct never want to lower it for shooting , resizing for the web later ia always an option, these are easy to forget or overlook at times , so be mindful, and your shots will be better for it

also spend time simply playing and exploring and test shooting in general , its that love of your gear and the act of taking that great shot and the enthusium that  it generates that transforms a noob into a totally camera addicted 24\7 camera carrying
maniac like myself,lol

enjoy that awesome trip destination and great new gear ,and welcome to the forum  :)
