here is something i have done to increase dynamic range in camera
shoot a picture while exposing for the brighter portion of the photo
for instance a dramatic sky colorful sky that is blowing out try several exposures so you have something to play with
dont let the darker portons get too dark in your exposure choice, perhaps 1 or 2 stops underexposed which will later be "rescued"

next review the photo and go to    :   jpeg edit > shadow adjustment

press it up to several times for the same image and you will see an increase of detail to shadow areas that are not too dark , while the camera will not increase exposure in areas that are truely dark , preventing a washed look

too much of this of this will make dark areas grainy  and result in an odd contrast look for the photo, but one or two
[even three???]  times can rescue a lot of detail  from the shadows , and at times doesnt look too bad.  [ 3 is pushing it :) ]

combining 2 or more exposures  that  have exposure modified to increase what is correctly exposed in the final image is usually done with the aid of a tripod and in a program that will combine the best of these multiple images on your computer

the in camera trick isnt perfect , but it will increase the dynamic range alot

also if you go to menu> camera icon 1 > gradation> auto

set it there

you will have a better dynamic range set in pictue taking setup

i think ............... anyone , i i correct here????????

Well, that is the theory, at least. ;-) I've got it on on my Pen. ;-) I don't know how well it works, though. :-)

Here is a crazy thing that I've been experimenting with that can be done "in camera". Use the multiple exposure feature and take two shots. Have auto-gain on. To bring out shadows, take one shot at normal exposure (ideally, expose for the highlights then dial down -0.5EV). Then take the next shot exposed for the shadows (I use +1 to +2 Ev). You are allowed to change the EV between shots. The result is the shadows from the overexposed shot, but since the auto gain reduces the highlights before adding it in you get some of the normal highlights too, so the resulting shot isn't as bad as the overexposed shot.

This would be really neat if you could do one shot high key and one low key and combine them, but you can't change the tone curve in the multi-shot mode.

Experiment with it and see what you think.

excellent suggestion , just discovered what overlay is !   this is something new to play with i had overlooked

im confused thus far about what it all means , or how to use it best , id love to apply this with shots where  colorful skys are washed out when trying to better expose for the lower portion of the image
is it better to expose for the sky first or the ground first  is it better as high key or low key , its alot to try to understand

some foolproof or near foolproof formulas , if you discover them or  create them would be appreciated

Erm, why don't you just use auto exposure bracketing and continuous shooting? Let the camera automatically take -1/0/+1 exposures in rapid succession, and then do your tone mapping in Photomatix/Photoshop or whatever?

Yes, that's the best way, just mentioning something that was interesting.

I might add... a lot of the features of most cameras, including making JPEGS, the art filters, black and white, color space and white balance etc. would be done better out of the camera using Photoshop. But there are a lot of people that don't want to bother goofing with each picture, or want some immediate feedback while shooting... or we could just all go back to developing film. One interesting thing is that Panasonic just added an in camera high dynamic range mode to the LX3 with a firmware update. The E-P1 is almost there, it has a "combine two shots" mode that performs leveling and you can change the exposure between shots. It would seem that it would not take much to turn this into a high dynamic range mode like the LX3 has now.

Depends which pen you have. My friend has the E-PL1 and I have the E-P1, and for some reason, the E-PL1 didn't have bracketing, unless it was in a different place. I, however, do utilize HDR photos with my E-P1, and have a link to some of my HDR works. They all involved Bracketing, which takes 3 photos and there's a setting for which steps you want to take them in.

I will be doing a tutorial on it here soon, so stay tuned. I used photoshop in the end by the way, but you can't really do it in camera.
