Great explanation on Dynamic Range. Leads into HDR tuturial
« on: August 02, 2011, 11:31:32 AM »
Check out this video that describes Dynamic Range.

Digital Photography 1 on 1: Episode 41: Dynamic Range: Adorama Photography TV

It's interesting that our eyes will capture about 24 stops of light by adjusting the pupil size.  If it was like a camera with fixed aperture size, then it can capture 14 stops.  Film can capture 12 stops.  Typical camera sensor can only capture 5-9 stops of light.  So, worst case scenario if you want to take a nice HDR shot, you will have to bracket for 5 different exposures.

There's also the problem of what you can see on a computer screen too.

A little behind the times, the new Sony sensor on the Pentax K5 and Nikon D7000 has a dynamic range of 14.2 stops at an ISO of 80 with an APS sized sensor.

The problem with any Panasonic is that they only auto bracket with a maximum 0.5stop difference between frames, so you need 7 frames or more to capture the whole dynamic range, at 3 fps this takes time so your limited to subjects that don't move between frames or you get ghosts that even the best software can't cope with. Such as this shot

The E-P1 is not much better, it can have 1 stop difference between frames, but your limited to 3.

I have to use my Pentax K5 to get the required 3 or 5 frames 2 stops apart.

Fanatic is correct. The advantage film had is pretty much gone. The cameras he mentioned have depending who you believe anywhere from 12-to better than 14 DR.

The pentax K5 on an actual photo captures 8.5 stops of dynamic range, the nikon d7000 does 9. DxO mark results are from what the sensor is capable of without processing.
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

The human eye isn't capable of seeing 14 stops.

Sure it can, but not at once.  The eye is constantly changing aperture.  Our brain does HDR automatically.

Think about it like the way a camcorder does constant metering when moved to different light sources

I can believe that. hdrsoft.com has am awesome gallery of HDR pictures and if I stare at a picture for too long my eyes start to hurt. I have not had much luck with my E-P1 and HDR I know I must be setting up the camera wrong. Seems if you set Aperture bracketing at 1 stop the ISO picks up the difference. Si I have to remember to set ut manually but even then I tried and the resulting pictures look very similar and when you import them to Photomatix again it shows the pictures as not having the correct spread in exposure values.
