Will this be the newest Olympus Micro Four Thirds camera?
« on: December 30, 2011, 01:54:35 PM »

Although this model is just a tad dated, recent rumors point that for the PMA show starting on January 10th, Olympus will release a weather sealed Micro Four Thirds camera with a built in viewfinder. The question is whether or not the camera will take a rangefinder shape, or a more traditional DSLR form factor. Other questions include what sensor the new camera will be using, and if accessories such as a Four Thirds to Micro Four Thirds weather sealed adapter will be made available.

What do you think the new camera will bring?

The big question is of course if Olympus will have a new sensor already.
Remember, the E-P3 sensor was supposed to be new when it came out only half a year ago.
On the other hand, there might not be much point in releasing a new, higher end camera with the E-P3 sensor.
According to Olympus officials, the new camera is not going to be a Pen, but the first model in a new, higher end series.

I don't see why it wouldn't at least have the GX1 sensor.

I don't see why it wouldn't at least have the GX1 sensor.

If the sensor is from Panasonic, it will most likely be based on the one in the GX1/G3. The question is what changes Olympus did to the E-P3 sensor to enable the fast AF. Can they do the same changes to the GX1 sensor or maybe it doesn't have to be changed?

I'm really hoping this new camera will have the new sensor... I was set to purchase the e-p3 until I saw the high ISO performance of the GX1.  Now I'm on the fence again.  Hopefully the rumored announcement from Olympus will include a camera with the new sensor (and a built-in EVF) :)

You all should be nervous, anyone remember when Olympus said they wouldn't go past the 12 mega pixels?
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

I have a theory: Maybe Olympus didn't get the G3 sensor for the E-P3 because they were in talks with other sensor suppliers and didn't want to sign a new multi-year contract with Panasonic?
So instead they modified the sensor they already had a contract for and used that until they had a sensor from the new supplier.
Just a theory, I know...

I don't mind staying at 12 megapixels... I just want the improved high ISO performance.

12mp is good, just make a new sensor, the current 12mp has been tweaked to death!  Time to change it out IMO....

I wouldn't mind a nice interchangeable lens rangefinder-style body (like the x-100 with an m4/3rds lens mount), too...

I agree... It's time for a new sensor. The G3/GX1 sensor told us that.  I just don't need more megapixels...

Interesting discussion...
We used to think 2, then 6, then 12, now 16 were all good enough.....

More megapixels aren't an issue per se' but a computer that can handle say 72mp sensor RAW file is  :D

The theory was that the perfect sensor was 6 megapixels. I think that's still true.

Then will you want a Epson RD-1s, The 1st Leica M mount Digital RF in the world, (yes, a few years before the M8) and had 3 versions, all the same 6mp sensor, the "1s" was the last version made. It was based on a Bessa 2 35mm film body. It has a 1.5x crop factor. Still $1,300.00 after all this time.  ???

But, what will the new Olympus Look Like?
Retro 70's RF?
We all want that, Right?

Technology thus far has shown there is no perfect sensor/mp.....

But to follow your train of thought, are you talking CCD or CMOS?

i would like a 24 mp sensor that has the high iso goodness  of a 6mp sensor ,, they just gotta tease 4 times the light down those sensor wells , and have less crosstalk  than  a schoolroom overloarded by a  a thick  oak yardstick  and a psychotic teacher

the new organic sensor technology promises better than full frame behavior  in an apsc  sensor , ...... im gonna believe this  and hope that fuji farms a version out to oympus , poor overdue olympus

The 6 megapixel CCD had the mathematical equation for being the lowest noise producing sensor because of the bayer array.

we shall know in just a month or so....
If it looks like OM1  8), AND has a P/A/S/M dial with the 4 way lower placed on the back (so my thumb doesn't hit the ISO button anymore  :(), I may very well jump ship on the G3....
OK, it can look an X100 with an m4/3 mount also  ;)  Maybe better! I have always liked the RF look...
