Two Sigma lenses for Micro Four Thirds!
« on: January 09, 2012, 01:54:12 PM »

Sigma 30mm f/2.8 EX DN: Extending a mere 1.5″ (38.6mm) from the front of the camera is Sigma’s new 30mm f/2.8 EX DN. This lens has a full-frame equivalent FOV of a 60mm lens when used on a Micro Four Thirds format mirrorless camera. The new Sigma 30mm f/2.8 EX DN features seven elements in five groups including dual aspheric lenses and a double-sided aspheric lens that help control edge sharpness and chromatic aberration. As with Sigma’s new 19mm f/2.8 EX DN lens, the new 30mm f/2.8 EX DN lens includes Sigma’s newly developed linear AF system for smoother and quieter operation, Super Multi-Layer coating for optimized contrast levels and reduced flare, a 46mm filter thread, internal focusing and a minimum focusing distance of 11.8″ (30cm).

Sigma 19mm f/2.8 EX DN: When used on a Micro Four Thirds format mirrorless camera, Sigma’s new 19mm f/2.8 EX DN has the effective FOV of a 38mm lens on a full-frame DSLR, which should appeal to street photographers and photojournalists.  Regardless of your choice of camera, the Sigma 19mm f/2.8 EX DN features eight elements in six groups that include three aspheric lens surfaces to correct optical distortions, color aberration and unwanted field curvature. The new lens also sports an internal focusing system and Super Multi-layer coating to reduce flare and ghosting while maintaining high contrast levels even when set at wider apertures. Other features include a new linear AF motor that eliminates mechanical gears or drives for quicker, near-silent focusing, seven rounded diaphragm blades for an attractive blur in out-of-focus areas, a 46mm filter thread, and a minimum focusing distance of 7.9″ (20cm).

not spectacular 1st offerings , but, a 38mm and 60mm with quiet motors and fast AF is a welcome addition to the m4/3 consortium.
This could only mean that finally there is a "3rd" party m4/3 lens maker with AF focusing....

They're only supposed to be $250 lenses. Why are people complaining?

Hopefully we'll get that in their next releases. At least we have third party AF lenses!

Sounds over-complicated in construction for the mediocre lens speed, and will probably be too expensive in order to compete on the second-tier market. Having no "macro" ability, I see no need to buy either.

It's actually High-Grade lens barrel finish.

Furthermore, how much should the 19/2.8 cost in order to compete with the excellent Pany 20/1.7, which is also much smaller, besides being much faster lens speed?

That was my thought as well. When I first heard about these lenses, I asked "WTF???". Almost same focal length and slower, bigger lens? And then there's the similar Olympus 17mm f/2.8 that's tinier again. I read a comment from the Sigma CEO or somebody claiming that they didn't want to go faster or pancake because they cared about optical quality, implying that fast pancake lenses were inferior.

I'm a fan of Sigma, but they're totally off the mark on these lens.

These are aps c lenses with aps c thought put into them. 19mm is 28 mm in aps c, which is standard wide, but what the hell kind of focal length is 38mm?
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

Aren't these simply the lenses from Sigma's DP series of large sensor point-and-shoots?

Doesn't the 30mm become ~45mm equiv?  That's a pretty useful imo.

*edit*

Oh, you meant 38mm when on m43....

It's a normal lens for aps-c and a short telephoto for m4/3. Pretty useless at F/2.8 IMHO. Pretty stupid pricing and meaningless product, having in mind that it could be a simple F/2 or even F/1.4 after the mirror box was omitted and if no telecentricity is required.

Oh, I agree, not good lenses, especially for m43... Maybe good for the NEX system if they were... $100-150 though... Or if they're ridiculously sharp lenses?  (Like... aberrations <1 pixel wide open on the 24MP NEX7)

Besides, NEX users are used to big lenses, hehehe

LOL!

The classic tessar formula is capable of exceptional sharpness at F/2.8, very well suited for the "normal" focal length, and could be priced much cheaper due to its simple construction of four lens elements in three groups.

It is just amazing that Sigma decided to make FF/APS sized lenses for m4/3  :o
Didn't they see the 14mm, 17mm 20mm pancakes with moderate f/stops? Even the 20mm with an f/1.7 is still high IQ and small!

Unless Sigma gets a clue, their m4/3 line is a waste of time.

I think it's perfect for me, actually. I get that extra stop from the kit lens at that point and none of the distortion. I'm going to probably replace my kit lens with it.

You mean the 30mm f/2.8, so you get 2 extra stops over the kit lens at 42mm, maybe 1 extra stop at 30mm on the kit lens.
I see your reasoning. Then a 17 and 30 make a good pair of primes, both at f/2.8.
Then the 30mm is about the same size of the kit extended, but not in girth.
