Two new Olympus lenses!
« on: February 02, 2012, 02:11:00 AM »
75mm f/1.8. It has a metal design. I haven’t seen that lens yet but I guess it has a similar 12-50mm finishing. It’s a perfect portrait lens!

60mm f/2.8 macro is weather sealed like the E-M5 body and has a close focusing distance of 0.19m.

No price yet though.

Cute! The 75mm f/1.8 may even convert some boheh fetishists to the system. And a weather sealed macro is of course welcomed, but a 100/2.8 would be more appropriate for bug life due to the greater subject distance.

Let's hope it has really good bokeh then.

The 75mm seems, at first glance, to be a rather unconventional FOV.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but the much revered ('The Bokeh Master') Canon EF 135/f2.0L, is (was) designed for a 135 film camera back in the mid-nineties (?), and gives excellent results on both EOS APS-C (x1.6) and APS-H (x1.3) cameras (sensors), - both being of 2x3 format design.  The FT sensor is, however, of 3x4 format.  Now, anyone with more comprehension in this matter than that of mine, - could the formats diagonal matter here?, - as that (the diagonal) differs in a 2x3 and 3x4 parallelograms, compared to each other?  What I'm trying to get at, . do we have reasons to expect a 75mm/f1.8 lens mounted to a µFT house to give (more or less) similar bokeh? (... and yeh, I do understand that a lot will depend on the lens constructor's design and intent regarding bokeh, - and that the perception of bokeh is an  'individual and to a large degree a subjective matter).  Any thoughts? Even if I enjoy shooting portraits with manual focusing, the AF of the Oly 45/f1.8 is great, - and a ditto (f-wise & AF) 75mm would still be great, - especially if it can give the same creamy bokeh as one get from the EF135/2.0 from Canon.

Yeah, I'd be much more excited if they had decided to make a 100 f/2 or 100 f/1.8 instead of a 75 f/1.8.  Even a 65mm f/1.4 would have been far more desireable.  I shot with a Sigma 150 on full frame for a while, and it was just a bit too long most of the time, and too short to act as a longer telephoto (great for macro, though).  There's a reason 85-135mm has been the 'standard portrait' length for a very long time.  I have never been a huge fan of 85mm, though the Oly 45's 90mm equivalent is just enough longer that it feels good to me.    I probably won't be getting the 75, but I hope they continue this trend.  I really want a fast 100 or 150mm lens to have some speed at the telephoto end.

75mm is an odd length to have, But, consider having a camera and 150mm f/1.8 at a schools talent show on a Gym Floor with a stage, or a wrestling match at JHS/HS and you are sitting a few rows up on the bleachers.  The 150mm fov is a blessing at f/1.8.

Or an outside little league game where you can stand near a fence at 1st base, again, a good fov, and at f/1.8 or f/2 can make a nice limited DOF photo.

Plus Weddings where being a good distance from the Wedding Couple could provide some great touching candid photos.

It may not be a popular prime in focal length, but, it can have it's moments to help you be a bit creative.

hopefully, it will be around the $500-$600 mark.

It does make me very happy to see Olympus making fast primes, though.  I like zooms fine, but I have become much more of a prime user over the years.  I rotate lenses in my bag based on what I think I'll be shooting, but at most I have two zooms in the bag at any one time.  Generally I bring my Leica 25/1.4, Oly 45/1.8, Oly 17/2.8 and Panny 7-14.  The last slot rotates often and can be the Oly 40-150, Minolta 135/2.8, Rokinon 85/1.4, Panny 8mm fisheye, etc.  I think I'd love to have the upcoming Panny 35-100/2.8, but I'd really like a 150/2.8 or 200/2.8 or something, with the same sharpness as the Oly 45/1.8.  :)   That would be awesome.

Of course, I'm very seriously contemplating the Oly 12/2....I may even pick one up as early as next week if I can sell a few lenses by then.

When I had a tele zoom with my K20D, Little League games was a perfect place for this FL, although I used the full 70-300 range. But many where within the 70-150 range (90-200 Fov). So 150 fov fast prime is a good compromise, along with a 100-300 or 45-175 X lens.

I am missing a medium telephoto from my Pen kit, so I am really liking the idea of the 75mm f/1.8. One of my favorite lenses back in my 35mm film days was the Nikon 180mm f/2.8. I found a lot of uses for that focal length, but used it mostly for shooting stage performances.

Imagine if it was the same price as the 45mm. Although this one is metal.

Unknown.
I'm not much of a wide-angle shooter so this lens interests me much more than the 12mm.....

Macro for me.
Since I have the Oly 45 the Panaleica 45 macro makes no sense for me.

One can hope... But when I think of that equivalent focal length at that aperture it starts to add up in my mind...

Different lenses for different purposes.  I have both and use both.  I use the 45 Macro pretty much exclusively for macro now, and the 45/1.8 for everything else, but there is room for both in one bag.  That said, an Olympus 60 macro could definitely be good.  Down side is that it won't have OIS.

I wonder if Oly ZD has given up on the 50/1.7 macro rumored about a couple years? I would love a fast, native m4:3 short macro tele. It's a better all around lens for me than the 60/2.8 macro.

The 75/1.8 makes a great medium tele for action/sports, street, portrait, reportage/photojournalism, stage/theater, interiors, and night photography. They could also stand to add a 90/2 or 100/2 medium tele.
Regards,

J A P

The rumored 50/1.7 is a macro: the 45/1.8 is not. Plus, the 50/1.7 would be the fastest short tele macro ever released.
