More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

I'm assuming this is just software though?

Its a hack for the camera. panasonic doesnt applaud it, and you really have to know what youre doing or you might crash it to death. I finished a video like a week ago with the 44mbit hack and the detail is ridiculous. No I did not use my camera. The 176mbit hack is above and beyond in detail. That ISO 12k video makes it well worth the hack...

Still, raising the ISO is something done through software with a hack, not the sensor itself. Right?

AFAIK, Yes, it allows a higher gain to dialed in.

The Hardware can handle more than what the manufacture allows, or is allowed by trade laws... for video anyway...
Canon is notorious for crippling body's... They use higher end cameras boards with software blocks to cripple high end features. But, doesn't everyone do this to save money on manufacture costs...???

yes but it still uses the algorithms the camera uses to process its own ISO 12k.

Ah, yes, such as the Canon blunder that allowed people to give it the same features as the 10D, because they literally used the same sensor that Canon intentionally crippled in the Rebel.

panny says that a constant high ISO footage  heats up the camera faster and thus the ISO 3200 limit. Dont know about that...
