Panasonic GF2 to be released this week!
« on: November 01, 2010, 04:54:54 PM »
http://www.43rumors.com/ft5-panasonic-gf2-to-be-announced-this-week/

What a surprise! Panasonic had the great idea to launch a new camera after Photokina to get all the attention from the media! We heard from our sources that the new Panasonic GF1 successor (the GF2) will be announced…. THIS WEEK!!! If you want proof that the GF2 really exists, take a look at the screenshot above. Panasonic registered the new camera at the Korean radio research agency. What will the GF2 look like? We have no picture yet but two of our sources have already seen the camera. The GF2 is incredibly tiny! De facto it will become the smallest mirrorless camera ever (bye bye Sony NEX!). And it will use the same Panasonic G2 12 Megapixel sensor

Stay tuned!

P.S: One source said it’s an incredibly sexy looking camera

P.P.S.: Panasonic really did everything to keep that announcement secret. Only a very few people knew about that announcement!

P.P.P.S: A few days ago we told you that the camera will be available by early 2011. It looks like the announcement will be made this week but the camera will be available by early 2011.

Lets hope it's not as ungainly, awkward and expensive as the GH2....

If the competition was the NEX, it's gonna be really disappointing..
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

I think what has hurt Panasonic is their pricing....Heck the GF1 was more expensive than quite a few DSLR's.....And if the GF2 is more expensive than the Sony SLT A33 & A55 well......

It's gonna be disappointing because panny lenses are huge. Despite having a bigger sensor, the NEX lenses are smaller than panny's. If they wanted to go small, optical IS was not the way...

Yes. I think the biggest advantage to a pen is the in-body IS. It would be interesting if the GF2 went to in-body IS.

On the form factor, different people have different needs. I'm in the group that would never consider the GH1/GH2 simply because it is so big you might as well get a DSLR in the first place. Only the smaller GF1 form factor makes sense to me for this type of camera and all the sacrifices you make from not getting a DSLR. Having a quick look at a NEX in an airport shop, I do think that is a nice body, and would love a m4/3 in that size. With tilting screen.

Judgement will have to wait on the GF2 until we actually know anything about it, but certainly I wouldn't expect it to be a bargain. That's one area where it'll be good if I'm wrong :)
Cameras big and small: Sony HX9V, Olympus E-P1, Canon 300D (IR mod), 7D and many others!

I'd love one too, but only if the lenses are small too. If I'm gonna carry a camera smaller than the NEX (or so they say) but need a camera bag for the lenses anyway, I might as well carry the GH#.

To get much smaller lenses largely means smaller sensor too. I use the 20mm f/1.7 on mine most of the time for its size. You simply can't do a much longer focal length in a pancake... Size optimisation is rather tricky... if you have the camera bag anyway, why not squeeze a medium format camera in it :D Will things converge that way? You either get really small or really big? How much room is there in between?

The NEX sensor is 1.5 times bigger than m4/3 yet the lenses are smaller, that is what I mean. My smallest camera bag fits the GH1 with the 14-140 only, it's smaller than my purse, it doesnt even fit a nikon D90. Having the gf1 with the same lens attached would mean I'd have to carry the same camera bag so I might as well carry the GH1 which is as big as the GF1 but with a hand grip. Primes are cool because they're sharp, fast and small (well..not always) but are very unpractical and at 20mm even more so. There's a LOT of room in between. I'm not being hostile BTW...

'He' doesn't mean difficult to use - just unbalanced visually. If they shrank the kit lens it might help - looks like a monster head on a tiny body - a Frankencamera.

I own a GI and an E-P1, neither are particularly difficult to use and I'm assuming Panasonic stuck to a similar menu style for the GH2.

Sorry about the he. I just dont find the g series unbalanced. I do find the GF# with anything other than the pancake or kit lens very unbalanced

"you betcha"?  ewwww, sounds like sarah palin :o

About a week ago there was pre-order option at B&H for a Panasonic Lumix GH2 body for $899, which is a little more than 1/2 the current price of a Canon 7d. I'm certain that the GH2 is more than 1/2 the camera the 7d is, but looking this afternoon I notice B&H only have lens-kit pre-orders available for the GH2. It looks like the body only option may be going away (which I sort of suspected would happen).

I don't have a clue why things are priced the way they are in the UK or EU, but it also looks as though there aren't many other options under the £1200 mark for a camera that does what the GH2 can.

I've used a GH1 professionally for a couple months and my only complaints about its "form factor" is that it is a little small for my hands and I would like a different location for the power switch.

it's 999$ with the 14-42, which are going for 200-230$ on ebay, which brings the price down to about 799$ for the body only. I was gonna do this but plans have changed. The 1200£ is for the 14-140 (excellent BTW) kit.
The review rumors coming my way say the GH2 is cleaner than the 7D up to ISO 3200.

All of your fears seem to be realized. I just hope Olympus doesn't go down this road because it's totally pointless to have an interchangeable lens camera this small....

Every NEX lens I've held is smaller (less thick) than the panny 14-140, 45-200 and even the 14-45. In fact the 14-140 is as thick as the alpha 18-250 give or take a mm. Oly lenses are smaller I guess because of OIS.
