so a body only should be 600$...

I would expect $550 max - but you could be right...

What we really need is for olympus to come up with the e-p3 with the hybrid viewfinder from the x100... now wouldn't that be the perfect budget m9 alternative... olympus i hope you're listening :)

Edit: not to mention the addition of the GH2 sensor for low noise performance of course... retro looks, rangerfinder-esque mode of taking photos, low noise sensor, IBIS, great build... what more could you ask for? (ok maybe a better LCD... but really who needs one if you have the hvf from the x100...)

Now that would be a special camera! Every time I'm in a store I look at the M9 and wish I could afford one, then I look at the x100 and wish it could interchange lenses. An Olympus camera like this would be just what the doctor ordered!

to use the same sensor is so wrong ,... its so
little different

a touch screen no one asked for
19% smaller volume no one complained about
no viewfinder integrated that many yearned for
less input and dials many feared the removal of
a sensor that shoulds have been of a new generation but was not

of course some one will buy it love it and take great shots with it, but i was expecting something completely different

and im dissapointed

the fujifilm x100 will be like  a fixed lens rangefinder updated with state of the are digital technology, a csamera ive been dreaming of ....ill be on line to but it the first day it goes on sale :)

I'm with u on everything you just said 1000%, I didnt post it my self cause I dont want the people who want it to shoot me. But come on...you're gonna use your fist sensor ever in your FIFTH camera? The least they could have done is the GH1 sensor with the updated venus engine.

$700 is still pretty high for a camera like that. I suppose they might make a light version without a touchscreen?

From what I've seen, each new version of something usually comes out at a price point similar to the previous version. This is the manufacturer's way of avoiding the "race to zero".
Yes, but only in the case where the replacement is along similar lines. e.g. a feature refresh of an existing design. But it doesn't apply necessarily if the target varies. For example, look at the E-P2 and E-PL1 taking slightly different positions relative to E-P1.

Or there is an alternative way to look at it. As a general long term trend, you get more features or functionality for the same price. To reach a certain level of functionality, the price does lower in the long term.
Cameras big and small: Sony HX9V, Olympus E-P1, Canon 300D (IR mod), 7D and many others!

You are right of course...over time, features will go up and the price will come down. It's the "over time" part that we must contend with. I was considering buying a new notebook computer 1-2 years ago, when 4GB RAM models hovered just over $1000. I thought, "When it breaks $1000, I'll buy!". Well, I made do with my company computer and now those models are at $500. I only wish camera prices would drop like that, but realize it can't because of the nature of lens manufacturing.

You hit the nail on the head 100%, cosinaphile! Well said.

My cynical side says Panasonic wimped out to their marketing people in this case, who was either: (a) chasing the same dummy demographic as Sony, or (b) got spooked by the Sony NEX and jumped on the same bandwagon.

Instead of following somebody else they should have done what they always do and be innovative. Attract customers with new cool stuff like that tilt VF instead of playing catch up.

Could this be the low end model, and the GFP2 could be released next year?

. . .surely everyone realizes this is only a backhanded response to the Nex series.

Someone else somewhere else posted something about how an industry insider from Japan said that real battle isn't between Canon and Nikon, its between Sony and Panasonic.

We are merely spectators to a preliminary skirmish.

The planning would be started even before the GF1 was shipping, but short of inside info, it would be impossible to say when they finally settled on a fixed spec to aim for.

If planning was started that long ago then I'm certain (at the risk of sounding insane from repetition voyager) that a pro small body is coming next year (2nd quarter).

There is so little difference functionally from the GF1 that I doubt this iteration needed a long lead time, it probably shares 70-80% or more of the GF1 technology and probably some major internal components.

I think the beauty from the manufacturers stand-point of the EVIL design is that they are down to just packaging interfaces and imaging chassis's.

It seems like this might have been planned as a much more advanced camera, but after Sony released the NEX they rushed it out as it is.

I think that's a very plausible theory. I can just see the Panasonic Marketing Talking Head berating the Engineering Lead about Sony "eating their lunch" while they (the techs) dawdle to create the perfect prosumer camera.

i think keeping the same sensor as the gf1 is absurd, its a pointless upgrade, less dials and buttons is what made the nex such an disaster before the  sony firmware update fixed some of the more embarassing oversights and awkwardness

It's probably an attempt at saving costs to go with touch screen monitor.  You figure every smart phone has a touch screen, so those things are probably commodity items now in the whole sale/OEM market.  Just makes a simple box, glue in a touch screen, processor, sensor and your done.  No gears and very little machining needed.  I can see a future where the Panasonic smart phone has a mount for m43 lenses.

. . . . or maybe the next GF will have a sim card inside?   :P   The GF2 is pretty close, as is, don't you think?

It's absolutely absurd to keep the same sensor after all this time. I do think we have to give the touchscreen a chance, I still need at least one dial but if it's responsive enough and well laid out a touchscreen is the future.
