Olympus just made a major flop?
« on: August 31, 2010, 05:24:12 PM »
The releasing of two new lenses, one of which is arguably useless for nearly every person who is buying lenses for Micro Four Thirds, and a special E-P2 kit. Is that all that Olympus is planning on releasing for us before Photokina?

I sure hope not.

What could potentially hurt Olympus is that supposedly, Sony will release new NEX lenses at Photokina

Come to think of it, why did Olympus release these two lenses just prior to Photokina? Don't manufacturers usually announce their best goods at the big show? Could it be that these are only the "warm up" acts? (I sure hope so.  :-\)

Yes, I'm a hopeless optimist!  :P I'm probably dreaming. Luckily, I'm not one of the lens mavens who needs the latest and greatest right now. I just need perhaps a reasonably priced, reasonably fast wide angle lens and I'll be happy for now. I don't pine for f/1.4 primes or f/2.8 teles. I don't have a budget like all those Leica-lites out there.

Yeah, me neither. I would however like an F/2 normal prime, simple and cheap. My 20+ years old Zenit was bundled with an F/2 normal lens and was worth noting in western money even when new, imagine the degradation we are witnessing when buying F/2.8 primes, or F/6.7 zooms. The zoom lens in a compact camera is more complicated and its resolving power is greater, but retails sometimes less than $100, together with a camera it is attached to. Even an Industar, an ancient Tessar knock-off, performs reasonably well and has only four lens elements, that is four miniature pieces of glass, two of them cemented together. What the hell are those men thinking? "Let us develop an ultra-long and equally useless zoom, with plastic barrel and plastic lens elements, let us put several abbreviations on it and it will sell at the price of our competitor's Dual lens DSLR kits...." No way, man!

What's lacking is true competition in the m4/3 lens market. Imagine how wonderful things would be if Sigma, Tamron, et al. all jumped in!

Always thought my m4/3 kit would include one kit lens and no other m4/3 lenses. Didn't realize they would make it so easy to stick too. Would really like a decent speed wideangle (35mm eq) and a short tele (80-100 eq). These lenses could be 2.8 and I would be happy. F2 would be just peachy!

New plan is to get kit lens (17 or zoom) and add mu OM 21 F3.5, and Leica 40mm F2 from CL. Wish the 21 was a little quicker, but it is sharp on the E30. Recently ried it and all was fine.

I need to pick a camera body. They sure don't make it easy.
thanks

i agree olympus is a company lost

out of touch with a commitment to system building ...

and out of touch with its enthusiast base, i cannot understand why they would make only lackluster zooms dont they have any iodea how many fast zooms they would sell or how many fast portraits or normals they wouls sell

they  are a cornucopia of missed opportunity :( :( :( :(

If I had a company with the smallest sensor in the market, I'd make uber fast sharp glass. It doesn't even seem logic their strategy.
You sure said it, missed opportunity after missed opportunity. They made a huge, positive step with the PEN and succeeded, then it was all downhill from there
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

There are reasons that Canon and Nikon are the largest quality camera sellers. They see the whole system and know what people want to buy. Once they come out with a mirrorless camera system, they will shoot to the top of that category too. Sony might be able to stop them - thats about it.

I see the Pen as a very mini repeat of the OM system. Remember how that revolutionized much of 35mm photograohy? It did very well, then af hit and they were like deer in the headlights. After a very failed attempt at an af dslr they just stopped making interchangeable lens dslrs. Absolutely amazing!

Can't they see how well primes are doing for Pentax? If someone would make a proper adapter the Pentax DA40 Limited pancake would be heaven on a Pen.

Which reminds me - is anyone serously trying to reverse-engeneer the m4/3 body-lens protocol?

The DA 40mm pancake is the same size as the Olympus 25mm pancake. It's going to be just as big.

The pentax DA40 might be as big as the Olympus prime after adding the adapter. Have no way of knowing - haven't seen how thick the adapter is.

Think the quality of the Pentax is better. Haven't seen anyone who thinks its a mediocre lens. Have seen plenty say the Pana pancake beats the Olympus. Some even say the kit zoom gives it a run in IQ. You would never say that about the DA40.

Don't really need an adapter with electronics. Just a mechanism to adjust the lens internal aperture lever. I could also make one - and I can't build anything!
thanks
