new lens rumor 12-50 3.5-6.3 macro, oly ....ouch

"(FT5) The new lens specs: 12-50mm f/3.5-6.3 and macro!

Finally I got the specs about the upcoming new Olympus Micro Four Thirds lens. It is a 12-50mm f/3.5-6.3 macro lens! So it’s slower and has 10mm less at the end than the Olympus Four Thirds 12-60mm f/2.8-4 zoom. But the new 12-50mm gains a macro feature, has super fast AF and has powerzoom. I have been told the optical quality is on very high level. The lens is quite big (two times the current 14-42mm collapsible kit lens).

The new lens is a nice walk-around camera for photographer and filmmakers. I wish it would have been a bit faster but as long as image quality is really high I can deal with that"

slower than i hoped

My science-fiction imagination tells me that slow-variable aperture zooms aren't going to go away anytime soon, the plan is to make sensors good enough to shoot iso 3200 as standard and make bokeh an in-camera software photo-style thing.

So then what is Olympus going to do when Canon and Nikon do that?

Massive yawn and a complete letdown. DOF wise this is equivalent to a 24-100mm f/7-13 on full frame. Try marketing that! Awful, useless aperture range for a lens this large. Hope the rumor is wrong...maybe an intentional false leak? I'm trying, here....

That is just in DOF not brightness... f/2 is f/2 regardless of the format of the image sensor.... f/2 on a 25mm lens = a 12.5m  opening, (m4/3) f/2 on a 50mm lens = 25mm (FF 35mm), f/2 on an 80mm lens = 40mm (6x6cm)  ALL are f/2 in brightness, BUT the DOF at f/2 will be different.... if fact f/2.8 on a 6x6cm will have the DOF a f/1.4 on a 35mm --- or you could say, f/1.4 on a 35mm FF has the same DOF of f/2.8 on a 6x6cm camera

(I am not talking abut the "Sensor" Light gathering speed, which changes and gets faster as the Photo Sites get larger with larger sensors....THAT is an entirely different discussion).

OTOH, this could be the "New" kit lens.... but, I have to agree, f/6.3 at 50mm is a bit slow... even f/5.6 would be better.... or f/3.5-4.5 even better for new kit lens..

This is completely useless.  It's a slightly downgraded kit lens.  Thanks Olympus.  Hey look, it can has macro and power zoom!  Does marketing really believe this will sell more cameras?  Now I feel like paying more for the Panny 45mm f2.8 macro instead of Oly 45mm f1.8 just to spite olympus.

Ugh. This would have been a reasonable kit zoom a year or two ago, but it's not the fast, wide, normal zoom I want now. It's f2.8 or too little, too late. Maybe the upcoming Panny zooms will be more to my liking.

You'd be missing out. I own both, and while they are both very good, if I could only keep one, it'd be the Oly without a second thought. It is SO good.

It will be around $400 and will be bundled in the future with the E-P3 and the E-PL3. That both sounds even more unbelievable, and like it's just an improved kit lens. How many are we up to now, 5?

it cant be that slow...think about it, why would it be twice as big as the 14-42? theres no reason at ALL as to why its f6.3 at the long end, I understand it on superzooms to keep the size down. I hope this is a big (FT5) lie.

I hope its a big FT5 lie as well.  Either that or hurry up and let Leica buyout Olympus to end the suffering.

a zoom lens with a slower tele end than 5.6 is a great big fail , didnt oly learn anything from the  absurdly overpriced, embarrassingly  slow,  plasticy,  70-300mm 4.5-6.7 debacle ?? i guess not!

Another dissapointing MFT lens. First two slow zooms from Panasonic and now one from Olympus. At least the range is decent for a "standard" zoom but why, why, why so slow?

It isn't all bad news as the lens is weather sealed so it is obviously going to be offered with a future weather sealed body, probably the "Pro Pen"

What a complete waste of R&D funding.  I don't think we will see a pro-pen anytime soon.  This lens was probably intended to ship with the pro-pen, but due to the yakuza take over scandal it's production was put on hold indefinitely because they just can't afford to produce it at this time.  Maybe Blackstone group who own 43% of Leica will save the day and buy up Olympus stock before Canon buys them out and sinks the product all together.  It is interesting that Canon doesn't have a mirrorless yet.  I wonder if they have friends in the same yakuza clan that gave them a heads up and told them to wait to buyout olympus instead.

this reads all .....like a bad dream ........any optical formula for a fast lens has a largish front element and the other lenses in the formula are internal and 1\2 the size or smaller  the face of this lens, from  what i can see is alot of plastic with an element in the middle there is no reason why this lens could not have been faster  and kept more or less the same size , but a bit heavier ........this clinches it for me , camera companies all have their heads up there rectum , and lack the imagination to make a good product , even when its clear what should be done
with the size of this lens which aint so small thery would have done better simply redesigning the cdaf design of their superb 12-60 2.8-4 4\3 lens
i cant tell you how discusted i am with olympus management , as if my disdain could possible go lower ? well it just has .
