A new E-P3 with an articulating screen?
« on: August 11, 2010, 02:26:01 PM »
If the E-P3 is indeed going to be a higher end model, do you think that Olympus will fit an articulating LCD screen on it? It would certainly be a lot more useful in most situations, and would take full advantage of the full time live view that the camera uses without the EVF attached to it.

don't have an opinion... but it would be  lovely. That was one of the things that made me consider a panasonic for a min.

I really wish they have a built in finder like the old pen, that would be really nice, I wish they can make a very nice clear detailed finder, it would be alright even if it was without an LCD back.

I don't think they'd be able to fit an articulating screen and a built in viewfinder in the same camera, unfortunately. Unless it looks like the G1, which would not entice me to buy it.

I don't see a huge benefit to my shooting by having an articulating screen...  and while I agree that a built-in finder would be a huge benefit, I would rather it be an optical finder, even if it was similar to the finders on the Canon G series.  While not perfect, they give a good sense of the scene, are not hampered by low light, and you don't have to worry about a refresh rate.  And it would not add a large cost factor.  Limitations would be for those who use manual focus lenses... they would have to use the LCD.

I strongly agree!

It would then be just a frame to look through. No TTL framing, no manual focus. Not my type of camera.

Fair enough... I shoot exclusively with the 17mm lens, so the framing concern would be a non-issue.  In all honesty, I am very happy just shooting with the E-p1 as is.  If cost was not an issue, I would be all in on a high quality EVF, though.  I would love to shoot through some nice Leica glass.

I would find an articulating screen very useful on a small camera like the PEN. As long as it's a side facing one, and not a bottom facing one. Those are useless on tripods.

you're crazy, this tells me you've never shot with an articulating screen. An articulating screen will give you the ability to shoot somethings that would be impossible otherwise (impossible to compose anyway). You can shoot super low angled shots without having to get on the floor or super high overhead shots. A VF for me is a necessity but if I have to sacrifice a built in VF for an articulating screen I'd do it, besides, the hotshoe VF doesn't add much bulk.
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

An articulating screen would be nice, but I am impressed enough with the extreme viewing angles offered by the existing screen that I don't miss it. An electronic VF would be cool too, but I'd trade it for a faster continuous AF, so the camera can be more of a camcorder replacement.

I am dreaming of a second small LCD on top of the camera, like the screen of the very first reflex cameras that didn't have a pentaprism...

Nope, not crazy at all (funny, though, my wife calls me crazy all the time)... I used to own the Canon G5 back about 6 years ago.  It had an articulating screen that I never used.  I tried it a few times, and it just didn't work for me.  With the LCD on the E-p1, I have taken pictures looking up at the front end of a car from the ground and had no problem framing the shot when down on one knee.

Please note, an articulating screen would not stop me from buying an E-p3... I just don't need it.

Wow, that is a great photo! You should post that elsewhere in the forum and I'm sure many people would comment on it. It's true that the viewing angle on the E-P1 is great, but are you sure it couldn't benefit from having the articulating screen?

Great shot, javarob75! I have also been able to picture from the ground up with only one of my knees on the floor.
I would however like to have a a screen that will articulate upwards, as I am tall an no tripod is tall enough for me. If I shoot with a tripod, I get some pain in the back because of the constant leaning forward.
OR, a top LCD  ;D

Using the E30 has shown that there are advantages to the articulated screen. Love being able to turn it in for protection when putting camera away.

Would like to see a return of some old technology. My 4x5 Graflex has a pop out sunshade that really keeps the glare off the ground glass. It would add maybe 1/8" to the thickness of the Pen (folded). It would collapse and protect the lcd when not needed. It could even be an add on attachment. Pentax made a small P&S once that had attachment points for a small, folding shade. This shade was much simpler - just a square made of plastic that folded flat for carrying in pocket. Wasn't as big as a credit card. It was great. Panasonic had a lcd shade that came with the Lumix LC5. At least both companies were trying!
thanks

thanks for the compliment.  I love the top LCD idea... it was mentioned in another post, a simple pop-up waist level LCD

of course you can take the picture but an articulating screen gives you the ability to frame it perfectly on just one try. Then you can shoot other stuff instead of trying to get it perfect 10 times..

My first DSLR was the Sony A350, and I really do miss the tilt screen on that. I only want a vertical axis one for 99% of uses so their implementation is perfect. I'd consider jumping to NEX just to get that back if it wasn't for the lack of native lenses for it. It just makes high and low angle shots so much easier. Fair enough you don't absolutely need it but it genuinely expands the usability.

Pardon me for asking--and I may have this wrong--but didn't you post a widely distributed photograph of a white E-P1 with a Pentax 70mm and a russian turret finder? You were an early advocate of the E-P1 as a neo-rangefinder camera?
