Just got the micro 9-18 and the EPL1!!!
« on: July 26, 2010, 03:52:18 PM »

Was looking for a used EP1 to convert for infrared shooting and found a great deal from a guy selling a practically new EPL1/14-42/9-18/ext. mic and a cute little Olympus backpack. Since I wanted the 9-18 to go with my EP2, I jumped.

Was having fun with the ELP1 - not sent for conversion yet - and got the above shot. Processed quickly from RAW to JPEG in LR3. Probably needs a bit more work for the noise - but I must admit that the EPL1 does handle it very well.
Thanks for looking,
Steve

Fantastic acquisition....!
If I may be so bold, why did the seller want to part with it?

Such a cute photo! The Lens Sample Photo Archive will be glad to see some new entries for this lens.

Panther, not bold at all. The company that the young man works for bought a bunch of these kits for some of their employees but then decided that it was not appropriate for what they planned on using them for. They told the employees that they could do whatever they wanted with the kits and this young man felt he had other cameras and would not use it enough to keep it. I just got lucky.

Wow, lucky you! I'm beginning to consider the 9-18, maybe for next year. Does it have silent internal focusing (like the 14-150)?

Stop it down to F/8 and the hyperfocal length will be at 2.72m (18mm zoom).
It is at the stunning 1.36m for 9mm F/4, which also means that everything 0.71m to infinity will be sharply focused.

Good point, adash. AF becomes almost irrelevant at those focal lengths. I'm more concerned about focus in lower light, like indoor shots. I'll consult the dofmaster site.

And of course the are not any distance marks, but you can pick an object at approximately this distance and focus on it exactly. Furthermore, the dofmaster quotes for DOF and distances when shooting photographs, when shooting video the DOF should be even greater since the resolution is lower.

It would be great if there was a focus scale on the lens and you could completely lock out accidental changes to focus.

The key for maximum sharpness is not necessarily to use the hyperfocal distance as that will generally be too close. Instead you want to focus around 1/3rd the way into a shot.

For example, if you want something at 1m and also at 10m to be sharp, you would focus at 4m (10-1 = 9, 1/3rd of that is 3, 1+3 = 4).

Easy, peasy.

The rule needs to be used with some flexibility - that scenario works if both items need have similar focus.

When you have something of significance in the foreground, you may want to shift the focus a little towards that as it is going to be what hits you when you look at the photo.
