Jupiter and the E-P1
« on: October 30, 2011, 01:30:20 PM »
Did some night sky photography testing last night, just to see what I could get.

Set-up was with the Olympus E-P1, Canon 70-200 f/4 L, Kenko Teleplus Pro 300DG 2X tc, tripod and 12 second timer.  The following was the best result I got in getting Jupiter and the four moons.

1/2 sec, f/8, fl=400mm, iso 400, converted to b&w and cropped to 1024x768:

Moons are, from L to R; Ganymede, Europa, Io and Callisto.

Then I decided to try to see if I could get some detail in Jupiter, I knew it would not be much but hey, why not.  The following is my best result using the same set-up as above.

1/200th sec, f/8, fl=400mm, iso 200, cautious PP with larger crops to follow:
504x378 crop, upsize to 1024x768

1008x756 crop

Half frame crop

Original frame

I was quite surprised I got some minor detail, and a little thrilled too!

That's really cool! The things you never knew you could see for yourself.
