This was my first M.Zuiko 9-18mm wide-angle shot that I deemed good enough for a Flickr upload.

However, I do have a problem with this lens: at the 18mm focal length end the camera (E-PL1) often locks with the message: "please, check the status of a lens". To remove that message it is necessary to lock and unlock the lens again, or switch the camera off, then on. According to the camera updater, the newest firmware for lens (v1.0) and camera (v1.2) is installed, although the updater does not display the type of lens (9-18mm).

Does anyone know what might cause this problem? I do intend to use the 9mm focal length far more often than the longer end of the focal range, but this is annoying nevertheless. (I got the lens for virtually nothing, so I shouldn't complain, really, but still.) It's not a new lens, so the guarantee terms have expired, unfortunately. Otherwise I would have returned it to an Olympus dealer already.

The converging shadows and reflections are what I find most interesting here, they create a perfect X in the middle of the photo.

That is a good framing, and I find the train the life of the photo.

Same error "Please check the status of a lens"
« Reply #4 on: January 30, 2012, 09:40:16 AM »
I have the same error "Please check the status of a lens" with my ep3 a 14-42 II R lens when I zoom to 31mm and beyond. I got this after I upgraded to firmware 1.2, but before I upgraded my camera never had any issues. when I listen closely to the lens it sounds like it has difficulty focusing then "boom" the error appears. However, when I lock focus on a shorter focal length and keep my finger half-pressed on the shutter then zoom in to longer focal length the error does not appear, so I think its an issue on the AF on a longer focal length. Please help! What do you suggest I do? Do you think it was caused by the firmware update? If thats the case then why did olympus release such a firmware without testing it out thoroughly.

Hey AmstelBright, are you having the same problem with your kit lens or only with the 9-18? Did you just recently updated your firmware? If so, I think our problem is with the firmware.

I really like this one ... the 'X', first narrow then the wide open ...
Well seen :)
