The Big Moon
« on: March 19, 2011, 06:24:11 PM »
The Big Moon!  Panasonic GH2, Pana 100-300 on the tripod with a remote shutter release. That big lens hanging out in front of this little tripod had to have been moving also.   I have placed a tree in the foreground but the moon was so bright that it simply faded to black.  I forgot to bring a tactical light to light paint the branches with!  I could have done a better job if I had thought it through before I left the house, oh well.....

Great shot!  I tried to shoot it through my 75-200 Panasonic Lumix but I couldn't get a good shot.  Focusing became a problem.  I pulled out the 100-200mm Canon FD and the extension tube like I had been shooting it before.  I still want more detail.  Yours is great.  Way more clarity and detail.

Do you mean teleconverter rather than extension tube? Your image looks like it has good sharpness but is under exposed by about 2 stops.  Where were you in the world when you took your moon image? I was in SC and we had a clear clean sky! I actually used auto focus!

Since I don't have any kind of long lens for my E-PL1 and tonight was a rare occurrence I'll sneak a Nikon D90 photo in here.    Anyway, D90 with the Nikon 75-300mm at f8.  Tweaked the NEF file in Capture NX2.  It was hazy tonight, I was really hoping for one of our nice clear, desert nights but didn't get it.  I'll try again in 2029, maybe by then I'll have a long lens for the Oly.

I could never get a good shot with the Panasonic 45-200mm either. It was easy enough to manually focus but the processed image was never as clear as it should have been. My other option of my Olympus OM 200mm also sucked as my MFT to OM adapter does not really allow proper infinity focus and I would have to stop down to at least f/11 to get a fair image.

On the other hand, my Nikon D90 and Sigma 150-500mm is a dream by comparison.

We have had nothing but 100% overcast skys and rain for the last couple of days so no big moon pics.
Be nice to each other, life is too short for anything else.

I also had overcast sky's on and off, but, I have no lens over the T mount 85mm f/1.8 for my Pentax...

These are just stunning photographs of the Moon.

Nice! Where did you take that from though? Most of the west coast of the US was very wet, we didn't get to see it at all.

The thing with moon photos is that they are really difficult. I find that wide open and 1/400th second works the best though at ISO 100.

I read somewhere along the way that the moon fools people because it's very bright but we naturally are thinking that it's dark outside and try to shoot like it's dark.   I shot it as a fairly bright object: f8 -1/3stop @ 1/500th of a second and ISO 320.  I used spot metering because the moon is essentially gray and camera metering tries to bring subject light back to an 18% gray equivalent.  It took a few exposures to get things where I wanted them.  No tripod for the shot, I just leaned up against the block wall in my back yard.  I did some PP in CNX2 to reduce the effects of the hazy sky.

Hi,

here in Germany we had a crisp and clear night-sky. No clouds.

For my image I was looking to get detail in the moon surface.  I shot on a tripod and metered (spot) on the moon which placed the brighter  zone 7 moon  into zone 5 (18% gray) then dialed in +1.5 ex and shot at f/10 and 1/40s and 160 iso.  Simple and sharp with great detail in the moon.  Keep the shutter speed a little fast due to the speed the moon moves across the sky.  A tripod is a MUST!

The zones are a way to discuss exposure in a way that is accurate and repeatable were developed by Ansel Adams a long time ago but is still valid today?

with a telescope from ebay that actually came with a m 4/3 adapter. Over sharpened in photoshop after lightening the shadows and darkening the highlights (with the shadow/highlights feature)

Nice shot, lisandra.  I like the better detail on the craters at edge of the lower left quadrant of the moon.

Mine is the worst.  The annoying thing is it is also the worst moon photo I have taken!  I just can't seem to get the right settings down that brings it in focus and lights it up well.

Lisandra - Can you show us the telescope you are using?  It looks amazing.  Always looking to understand that telescope camera thing.

pretzston, most probably your teleconverter is to blame for the soft image.
BTW, you shouldn't have given away the panny, you just had to MF with it.
