Rainbow umbrella
« on: February 23, 2011, 06:41:23 PM »
here is one of my ner water drops taken with a GH2 and the 45 mm Leica.  This is beyond 1:1 macro as the water mushroom was much smaller than 1/4 inch.  These are lots of fun to create and just goes to prove that you do not need a DSLR for special photography!

This is astonishing, Mark! What is the working distance for that lens in 1:1 magnification?

What kinds of things do you need to set up one of these shots? I'd love to take a few of these to use as artwork...

I use a computerized camera timing system that I program on the fly with time values, delays, drop sizes and so on.  It is pretty touch and go as everything is constantly changing.  You can contact me for the name and web info for several companies offering this type of equipment.

Did you get it wet while shooting these?

No. The spray is minimal!

Im trying this soon. I got with my new studio a couple of pocket wizards and two old flashes (one sony, one metz, and they both sync, to my surprise). I dont have a dedicated program thatll make my cameras shutter go off but I do have a custom one that can set my flashes off at intervals (like yours, but it would go off every three drops or every 6 seconds) I tested it with just the drops and the signal from the program (no flash) and it syncs perfect. So Im thinking of doing it in a completely dark room and leaving the shutter open for maybe 2 seconds (or shorter, untill the flash goes off) and letting the light from the flash do the work. Do you foresee problems?
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

Nope! That is a good starting point!  My shutter is normally around 1/2 s and the only difference is that I have electronics to create and time the drops! Set your flashes to about 1/32 power to freeze the motion...

Thanks for that, I set them at 1/128 power and results werent good (I only fiddled with it twice) 1/32 it is. How about aperture? at 1:1 macro and using pannys 1:1 aspect (for a bit more magnification) DoF is a bit nightmareish, or maybe whats off is the focusing? using a modeling light I focus at where the drop hits but I dont know if thats right. As u can see Im at the very amateur stage with this

F/20 or smaller! Iso 100 and a shutter speed from 1/3s to 1/5 s with 2nd curtain sync.  Place a 1/2 inch bolt in the water and let the drops hit it towards it's top back, focus on the front threads about 1/4" above the water.

The trick is to have a BLACK exposure if the flash doesn't fire.  The flash is to provide 100% of the light!!!

You might consider 1st curtain sync and set the roast to strobe mode with say 10 flashes Ann and a shutter speed long enough to be open for all 10 flashes!
