Olympus Digital PEN Cameras / Re: Who still owns an E-P1?
« Last post by traveler_101 on Today at 01:48:06 PM »
That is the coolest viewfinder I have ever seen. Where did you find it?

Well at least voyager likes it. You guys crack me up--a taser! Actually it's a FSU (former Soviet Union) turret finder made by FED, I believe. It came from a stolen pre-war Zeiss design. (The Russians confiscated all the Zeiss blueprints and built a camera industry around them.)

It's not for focusing, just framing your shots--like the VF-1 with the 17/20mm lenses--except the turret finder handles 5 different focal lengths. As I said in my post, it could be used to accompany native M43 AF lenses, not for MF at all. I never bought one, btw. But I use a "dummy" optical viewfinder with my E-P1/20mm combo. I like using the viewfinder to frame some of the time and it is always there if the sun makes the screen unusable.

Where did i find it? Well the photo is in a collection of E-P1 photographs I took off the web as soon as I found out about the camera. I was really interested in the idea of the E-P1 as an electronic "poor man's rangefinder" (a term/idea I found on another range-finder oriented website). A lot of camera enthusiasts in Japan were similarly inclined to view the E-P1 this way, including the guy who put together this rig.

I bought it online so I have 2 weeks to decide. Some things for the moment, they can change per day, but this one is a permanent negative point.

- the body lacks a good grip. I noticed that in the contrary of my Canon 5D or even the PEN PL1 I keep the PM1 with my left hand around the lens instead with my right hand.
- you have to search how to delete a picture, really search.
- PASM is only available via menu
- bright sunlight you really want a EVF. I am going to buy one, because it's also excellent for my PL1 and XZ-1
- very unstable with a real zoom

positive point
- the color of the body matches the neat lenses that are released by Olympus.
- but if you found the right setting al goes as usual, the PL1 already lacked a control, so that's was not so unusual for me.
- it's quick with the startup.

but I have 10 days left so...

the smaller the sensor the sooner diffraction sets in period
really small sensors top out at f 8

sensors for enthusiast compacts top out at f 11

m 43 f 16

full frame 22 or 32

large format is the f 64 club 8)

That's the best and simplest explanation I've seen yet.  :)

This lens is very tempting, but it's $100 more than I had hoped. I'd probably consider this if I was still a hockey dad or a proud parent shooting his kids' plays/performances/recitals (at least if I was a hockey dad with deep pockets). I seldom shoot anything at 75mm (on my 14-150), but then the f/1.8 is a game changer and opens up entirely new avenues.

I'm trying to decide whether it's better to blow $800+ on this lens, or the 12mm f/2.0. Both are highly desirable, yet both just falls outside of most shooting conditions. (I mean, can you really justify paying that much for a lens that might be used only 10% of your time?  ???)

(Maybe you should move this thread to the video forum.)
Why don't you make a review for it?

Good idea. I'll post some clips on the Video forum when I get the chance. I've been so busy that I haven't had a chance to even play with it.

Photographic Techniques / Re: Dramatically reduce your JPEGs

Doesn't this also reduce the dimensions of the photo?

No, the original dimensions are preserved. Otherwise, any app could dramatically reduce your JPEGs simply by reducing them to sreen-sized images. (And in case anybody was wondering about that, I've found that the Image Resizer Power Toy from Microsoft still does one of the best jobs of the resizers I've tried.)

I know not many are fans of numbers and charts, but there's proof this lens is fairly Sharp. I got around 2442 lines with the 14-42 ii and this lens churned out 2521. That is a noticeable increase in sharpness.  Your samples are all the proof I need

Olympus Digital PEN Cameras / Re: What's under the plastic grip pad?
« Last post by Yrfling on Today at 08:02:28 AM »
Looked for a tutorial, didn't find one, so I broke out 1 small screwdriver & tutored myself.  Found nothing obviously wrong & re-assembly fixed the squeek problem.

For anyone interested in the original question who doesn't want to disassemble their camera, there are some registration slots in the cover panel.  The grip border has tabs that fit into the slots, the plastic grip holds the border in place and it is held on with small screws from underneath.

Still thinking about fabricating a better grip now that I know how it's put together.
