W/NW Holga/Lomo effect done in editing.
« on: May 20, 2011, 07:29:06 PM »
With the popularity of the Holga/Lomo cameras and lenses, I thought, since I don't own either, to give it a try.
It is easy, really, just a black round vignette for a simple Holga/Lomo look, .

Here is my edit of your image (I hope you don't mind):

HOLGA effect as I see more realistic. Added contrast, colour tweaking, central and edge blur.
All done with GIMP.

Hm, maybe the vignette is too gentle....

A combination of the two edits will be holga-perfect

Yeah, the vignette should better be exponential, rather than linear....

Dear sirs, may I inquire as to what editing programs you would use to aqcuire these effects?

I used two programs,
ACDSee Pro 3 in EDIT mode for the Vignette effect
Paint Shop Pro X3 for the Slight Barrel Distortion, Saturation gain, and soft focus effect, that I added in this version as an suggested update

I tried merging the 2, but I lost the vignette, so I just worked a bit more on the edited version to fine tune it.

Nice Adash

Here is my try at it "Again"
I used a DOF effect, over saturated a bit, added contrast, used a Pincushion distortion a little. sharpened a little more, and added a vignette edges.

I have Paint.net that use now and again... But, if Gimp has made a total GUI a lot better than few years ago, I'll give it a try for limited effects.

The gui of GIMP was a pain in the @ss on Window$ (yes, I used to have it once upon a time). I hope they have improved it. I find it pretty useful on Linux, but my window manager works in a different fashion - it does not raise a window on top of other windows when I click on it.

It is still separate panels on the desktop... I prefer an integrated GUI in one window. But, all the tools seem better accessed, and used. I will keep it and try a few simple edits and see how the workflow is.  Paint.net is a better GUI IMO, but, you need to add all the editing tools separately from their Plug-In forum.. But, there are a quite a few cool plugins..

I found a "LOMO" effect plug-in for Paint.net (on their website) and here is a result. I also adj contrast and saturation and lightness a bit.
What do you think?

OK, My biggest challenge was how control the opacity on the "Lomography Effect" plug-in for "Paint.net editing program.
I tried merging two separate images
1) The Original w/o any effect, just typical PP stuff... On 1 layer (bottom)
2) The same image with the "Lomography" effect plug-in applied on the lightest setting... On layer 2 (placed on top of layer 1. I then adjusted the opacity to about 50% (to my liking)
3) Increased the saturation a bit on the Lomography layer, overall, and for selected colors.
4) Applied a Graduated blur with a wide feathering and large circle area, and adjusted the amount blur to my liking.

Merged the 2 layers and saved it.

I did the edge softness with a separate layer, with an alpha channel gradient.
The vignette, saturation etc. were done with a simple mask.

I've ordered one from ebay (around €15), will be posting some results when I get it.

I may get it, right now, I have been working getting my 85mm and 400 it top shape with dedicated adapters, and I just bought another adapter and a .45x wide adapter for the O/14-42ED..

adash, I don't understand "Alpha" channels for masks. I guess I should learn, But, I have to use Paint Shop Pro X3 than can memorize a series of tool adj as a preset.

It's for the layer with the blurred image. See how it increases towards the edges? It is made of a layer with zoom-style blur, and an alpha channel, which defines how much of it will be visible when the two layers are stacked on top of each other. The alpha channel itself is has a circular gradient, beginning with zero in the center and ending with 100% opacity at the edges.
A mask is where you put the gradient for the vignette, play with saturation, curves, etc.
I had to work with your image, that has your name and the frame, so I created a rectangular mask inside and worked in it instead. I wouldn't have to if I had the original image or if I could ditch the frame.

Adash, I uploaded a sized original, not in pixels, but in JPG compression only...
The think seem to get, is how to make Vignette mask, I know how to change the opacity of a layer, but it sounds like I need 2 steps, a graduated layer with an oval selection made.

Let me see how I will do it.
First apply Gaussian blur (size 2 or 3).
Then select all and create a new file from the selection (choose transparency as the colour of the new file).
Paste everything into it.
Now working with the second image:
Then on the new image select with the fuzzy select tool all of the areas with monotone colours (use feather edges for that selection) and delete all of the selected. Transparent colour must show from below.
Then invert the selection.
then decompose your image ( in GIMP this is under Colour - components - decompose) into RGBA (RGB plus alpha)
In alpha channel (it should be a white silhouette with black areas where you deleted monotone colours) add a radial type gradient ( black to transparent) with black in the middle (this is where the greatest sharpness is supposed to be).
Then recompose in RGBA, choosing the correct values for each channel (we are not swapping channels in this edit).
You are supposed to see the reconstructed image with its center filled with a big transparency, slowly becoming opaque over the edges.
Apply Motion blur of the type "zoom". More than 5 or 7 is an overkill for "length".
When done, do Select All, Copy and paste as a Layer in the original image.
Now you have edge softness, with what I consider to be typical for the singlet-type plastic lenses of Holga and disposable cameras.
Then Merge layers, add the expired film look via Curves tweaking, and add another radial gradient for the famous Vignette:
I hope you like it.

I have Gimp 2.6, Did you use this?
I can then try this without interrupting the steps in a different program.

Mine is GIMP 2.6.8.
You'll have to play a bit with the tools to get a feeling of how exactly they handle. That's especially true for the Fuzzy select.
Ask if unsure what to do, although I will be able to answer after 9 hours (I am going to bed now).

BTW, framing is not typical for a HOLGA camera. They have wide angle lenses (about 40mm in 35mm equivalent, I guess) while this shot was taken from a distance with a telephoto lens.
