What do you use for noise reduction?
« on: June 07, 2010, 05:55:45 PM »
I have the vague feeling that this topic was once started before, but this seems like the perfect place to start a new one.

I use Noise Ninja and the plugin for Lightroom.

Is the Noise Ninja a standalone application or is it a plugin? I have seen Noise Ninja as a part of Bibble 4/5, not sure it was even a plugin. I got very good results from it!

I generally use the noise processing tools in PaintShop Pro Photo.  These work fine for me and I am not overly obsessed by noise anyway.

When I remember (or bother) to apply noise reduction, I use Noiseware Standard Edition. This app is incredibly intelligent and gives great results. They have a more limited freeware version called Noiseware Community Edition.

I have my E-P1's noise reduction set to 'Auto' with strength 'Standard'. Does anyone know exactly when the camera kicks in its own NR during 'Auto'? The user manual is vague, saying that 'Auto' enables NR only during "long exposures". Far better would be for NR to kick in automatically during high ISO. Setting the NR to 'On' would ensure that NR always occurs, but the manual states that this would cause the camera to take twice as long to save each picture.

Actually the menu entries are quite misleading. Noise Reduction takes another exposure with curtains closed and then subtracts the two in order to eliminate hot pixels. The Noise Reduction as commonly known is in Noise Filter.

Now I understand--you're right: the labels are misleading and is made worse by the confusingly short description in the user manual that doesn't make a distinction between the two. So I assume that by setting the Noise Filter to 'Standard', my E-P1 is applying moderate amounts of "noise reduction" to every shot I take?

Indeed it is. I don't recall if this is also valid for RAW shots however. JPEGs are noise reduced for sure.

It's some mod that I found that allows you to edit photos in Lightroom by opening Noise Ninja and then when you export the photo it makes another version of the photo copy into your catalog in Lightroom.

I use Neat Noise. The default settings produce good results in most situations. If not, I can get what I want after a little tweaking. The free demo version is powerful enough.

I hear it has great noise reduction compared to Lightroom 2. Can you confirm this?

At first I used NIk Sharpener with very good results. But after Lightroom 3 instalation, there is no need for some other software ...

I use the "Wavelet De-noise" script in GIMP

essentially you can control how much noise reduction in the L, A, or B channels

and the best thing is it (GIMP) is open source!

I find that Corel Paint SHop Pro Photo X2 has one of the best noise reduction algorithm among the software that most photographer use.  8) The reason is, you the user, selects which noise profile to use for the photo by selecting the area to do the sampling.

My previous camera was a Canon S3IS, which while fast for a crossover, does exhibit noise in the shadow areas. This is easily corrected with no artifacts using the PSP X2.
