I don't think it matters, as long as the concept of using these two elements of  subject vs space is used and needed to complete the final image's impact is understood.

Thanks for summing it up so succinctly M5 - exactly what I've been saying all along....

Here is a Droid 2 image... Not very good IQ, and I used Picnik online to do a bit of post.
a bit unconventional in composition, since the Subject is in the upper right sort of...
But, the lower part of the image is relatively uninteresting, but needed, as the cropped version shows

Cropped: A much better composition IMO

i the case above the cropping did help strengthen the image , but perhaps even more
'emptiness " could have conveyed loniliness or solitude if so designed and realized

for me the negative space will always be a subset of all the space which is everything within that rectangle which we call a
photograph

Can shadows take the part of the negative space in a photo?

the shadow photo is quite beautiful, and is a nice example of the negative positive interplay of space one might consider when discussing the visual merits of a photograph

for the record, the negative space in the photo is the paler non shadow parts, the shadows as they play against the sunlit ground are the subject or positive  space
