when it comes down to it things sound more impressive that they are, I actually sold like 17 or 18 12x9/12x8s and a big one. Not that much in a gallery filled with lots of photo lovers and tourists. The 5D infrared guy (I know, an infrared 5D!!) made a fortune. Thats why I said I needed one!

A 5D IR is no big deal, I had one and traded it for an XPan!  Now, the BIG deal is the fact that you did this in 4 hours!  That is just great.  What could you have done with two 8 hour days?

DOnt say stuff to me like that man, I get too psyched!!!
It took me a long time to figure out that I have to go where the right customers are (those that are willing to buy and not just browse)and where those places are. Im curious to see if I can do that well on my own without a partner pushing sells with me.

By the way, just wanted to mention that Costco does incredibly cheap prints, and they are of the same quality as Adorama and Mpix. I was astounded that my $5 16x20 was so good.
Getting a quality print from these places is a definite possibility, my local costco uses a large format epson (the 44 inch). But I challenge (openly challenge) anyone in the world to print me a perfect monochrome like the one I can print using an in-home epson and a raster image processor. Its about control, no surprises, the print is gonna come out exactly like you processed it.

Only problem with Costco is the prints always turn out a bit darker than I expect. But for the price and avoiding the hassle for prints that I just want around the house, it's pretty good. Your usages might make this a less plausible possibility.

Always check for a full histogram in photoshop before going to print, that might help. Some places convert your image's gamma to a higher one before printing and the result is a lot of clipped stuff

Get Coscos ICC profiles for their paper and print systems.  Use the proofing system in Photoshop.  This will put you into the color space close to their printing!

That would give you really close to what you see prints.

And just in case you want to try it but are not sure how:
-in photoshop under view select proof setup
-select custom
-under device to simulate select the profile you got from costco and saved in your computer.
- under rendering intent you can leave it at relative colorimetric (people disagree with me on this)
- check the box for black point compensation
- check the box for simulate paper color (people also disagree with me on this) and black ink (the black ink box checks itself if you check the simulate paper color)
- save it (click save so you can use it later on other photos, give it a name like costcos paper)
- edit away

It takes about 12 seconds to do once you have the profile. Oh yeah, buy a huey (the cheapest I can think of) and get your monitor calibrated.
