If you're not looking through a viewfinder, you get NO respect.
« on: September 11, 2011, 04:27:57 PM »
So there I am, at a concert in the park.  I'm not looking to take a photo for a magazine, mind you... just trying a new lens and wanting to keep a couple memories.  These were shot with the 4/3 50mm f2.  I find this cool behind stage vantage, and am snapping away.  Out of the blue camps this 'pro'.  No nod, no smile... I guess it's tough to have one eye glued to a viewfinder and also be considerate of those around you?  Possibly I got no respect because my eye wasn't similarly glued to a viewfinder?  Or maybe m4/3 simply still gets no respect as a whole.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not pissed.  She was there and gone soon enough, and I am satisfied with some of the shots I got.  But what do you think?  Any similar experiences out there?

Don't you love that? Your photos will probably turn out better too.

Looks like a kid with a Daddy bought DSLR  ;D ;D ;D

I pay no mind, because, I "Move" like a PRO, and have no problem getting in front of people to get a shoot.

I use the EFV and LCD, just depends on if I need to follow action and use the touch screen release, or I can look through the EFV because they are more stationary.

In most cases, I love the fact that no one gives a second thought to my e-P1... allows me to capture candid images in public with ease.  The only time my camera garners any attention is when someone approaches me to ask either if it's a rangefinder or what film I'm shooting with.

But there are certainly times when I miss having a viewfinder...

NOT BEING NOTICED IS THE GREATEST THING A SHOOTER CAN HOPE FOR

still, sadly..... posers with big guns or morons with m9s[and ive seen a few] are around  "pros" who think  noone else matters..

..this girl is probably too coarse... too rude... too arrogant or an  unpleasant coctail of all   3      :o    , if she had a little class whe would have acknowledged
her blocking your view with a apologetic smile ....and not blocked you after a quick moment

we live in a culture of me me me, im not surprised

I feel now I most qualify part of my reply....
"....and have no problem getting in front of people to get a shoot.  ..."

I do allow others to shoot, and will move to slightly different place to get my shot....
If I need to block someone (typically not a photographer), I do ask, and try not to block too much, if possible)

On the positive side,
Candid shots are easier to obtain since you blend in with the tourist  :)

Well, of course to be a PRO you have to a lens that is at least 18" long...

So fun to hear the different perspectives you all have, thank you!  What an interesting format this m4/3 thing is.  It brings together experiences from pro to amateur and forces us to be subject to scrutiny from all angles.  To me, the strengths of the system so outweigh the weaknesses that I'll be here for a good long while.  But I wouldn't mind a peaking feature for focus, let's be honest!  Cheers all!

That is what a PEN is all about.
You can take great professional pictures with a cam that looks like a P&S.
It is much easier to get access to good positions, musea, concerts,..... .
The DLSR guys get kick out and PEN guys can stay :)

I do not think this kind of things matter once you've chosen m4/3.

BTW, 20 years ago there was a huge argument between a canonist and nikonist, who has a bigger one. It lasted until the canonist mounted his 200-400 mm on his camera, and painted the hood red...

I don't have a lot of experience but my limited engagement make me feel inadequate just because people expect the big DSLRs etc.

Buy a vf2.

Yes offcourse you don't get any respect. Everybody thinks you have a 1/2.49449584 inch sensor compact camera.

You can get a large Berlington bag slung over your shoulder and stuff it full of paper to make it look like you have a a lot of expensive gear? The bag alone will be over $250.00  ;)

Unless im being paid to do so, I always wait for fellow shooters, even if theyre with their point and shoots

This explains it--she was probably hired to get some shots, then hightail it out of there. Most likely not a 'pro' either--just someone with a big camera and willing to work for cheap.

I didn't get my PEN system to garner "more respect"--I wanted to be as portable and unobtrusive as possible. Many events will stipulate "no professional cameras" and "no video cameras". Guess what--I have both in my E-P1 and nobody'll be the wiser.  ;)

Nice to see you back by the way, Gruu--long time no post!

what I meant is if a lot of us are competing for the same shot. Like on a concert, where you're allowed to shoot for the first 3 songs or so and are elbow to elbow with like 13 other photographers.  Any other occasion showing people respect usually means you'll be shown respect. Everybody nowadays has a camera, the fact that I am hired for something doesn't mean no one else can shoot. There are some people who simply think they're more important than the rest of us for the wrong reasons, like say...a big camera.

But if an organisation hires you to take pictures, it is logical you can shoot at the best positions.

Yes, but there may be other "Paid Photographers" as you "To Get the Best Positions".. Look at how Photographer in a "Press Core" for Political events act.. They all allow each other a space to work in, even though though they are all under pressure to get a great photo... At Concerts, I'd bet it is similar with the "Real Pros". Meaning those who shot for food, not as favor for someone, act in a similar manor towards each other.

concerts are gruesome man, if you get offered the opportunity turn it down. The really generous venues let you stay there for three songs, most let you be there for one. Getting "the shot" in a 5 minute window is close to imposible. Being a 118 pound thing doesn't help things. You will get pushed. That's not the case on the photo posted here, that girl is just wrong...

Nobody has mentioned it so far...the first and 4th shot are cool if you crop em a little. I like the expression of the singer on the fourth.

I keep asking myself that everytime I think about upgrading my e-p1 instead of picking up new a lens...
