That is nothing new. Sony were the first big name to fall foul of this, and as a result they added a feature to disable night vision mode in daytime.
Cameras big and small: Sony HX9V, Olympus E-P1, Canon 300D (IR mod), 7D and many others!

As there's no reciprocosity failure with digital you can record full colour pictures in (what is to us) total darkness. A digital sensor will just keep recording photons until you tell it to stop, by closing the shutter.
