Freelensing with the FD 50/1.4
« on: July 14, 2011, 06:55:16 PM »
So I tried freelensing with my FD 50/1.4 tonight.  Was an interesting experience.  Definitely a little crazier than using a true tilt-shift, but somewhat similar results.  I barely missed focus here, putting the focus slice just a little to far down, but it gives you the idea.  :) I then cross-processed it to complete the vibe, though the tonality was similar, given the reduced contrast from some light intrusion into the light box.

And two more.  The last one is kind of a throwaway shot, but it shows what happens with strong downward tilt.  The more I look at this 2nd shot, the more I like it, though:

These look like great results. I know how difficult manual focus can be, especially when using a lens like that. I think your photos are great though.

Thanks!  I don't have a problem hitting focus with regular manual focus - I find it quite easy with the great viewfinders in the GH2 and GH1.  This, however, is quite hard to get things lined up.  If you're not familiar with it, you detach the lens, hold it in front of the camera, and tilt the lens, essentially making a tilt-shift lens without the tilting mechanism, and obviously with a small gap where you tilt (which you have to watch for light intrusion).  It's not easy to juggle focus and tilting with a detached lens, but it makes for some cool results!

I had to look up "Free-lensing" to figure out what you did...
The results are very interesting (in a good way).  ;)

I imagine it takes getting used to, as you say in reply 2.. do have different focal lengths, you have tried it with?

I can't wait to see more....

Oh, that's what you mean by "freelensing"! Nice shots--they have a beautiful "dreamy" effect.  :)

I suppose I did a variation of "freelensing" when I put my E-P1 against a telescope eyepiece, hoping to snap a shot of the full moon. It was a disaster.
