I always leave about 1/5 of the right empty....I'd rather be a "Tad" darker, and bring it up later.

Save the High Lights, is my mantra !!!!

But, as he pointed out, today's sensors are very good at low noise suppression and achieving great IQ also... so, no real need to "Almost Loose" the Highlights to gain better noise control.

Where I put my "Right" side most of the time....

absolutely true

a  blown highlight has no data to salvage , but i am often surprised to see what can be dragged out of the shadows of a decent but dark raw underexposed file

Yes, and the E-P1 likes to blow highlights even when the histogram says your not going to...

I did this quick test last year with my old Canon 1Ds FF, not known for high iso performance the camera peaked at iso 1250.  I took a picture of my cat that was more than two-stops under exposed.  I bumped the image +2 ev in DPP, than bumped the exposure again +1 ev in acr and I was amazed at what I pulled out of the image.  All the pushing gave the image an effective iso of 6400.

My E-P1 loves to underexpose.

Almost all cameras underexpose. This helps the non photographers get usable results.

One of the biggest gripes across the boards is under exposure at "0" EV setting.

But, to satisfy the masses with good  OOC photos, and sell cameras, this is the reality.

I'd bet the ISO on film camera's were probably set a tad Lower for the same reason.. To give a negative with bit more density for better printing. I believe the ISO talerence was 1/3 stop either way from ISO (ASA), standard.

I have learned to overexpose with the E-P1 and I'm not going back, even at base iso and over strong light.
I usually overexpose to amount of +0.3ev. At night and in dark places I don´t mind going up to +0.7ev.
In return I get images free of noise and with much more detail.
Of course much attention as to be placed at the brighter areas of the composition.
I found out that almost all the details over the bright areas can be recovered reducing the brightness of the image and then pushing up the fill light. Then compensate for the blacks and contrast.
The downside of this is that you really need fast lens and this is one of the reasons I consider the Leica 25mm f1.4 over the the pana f1.7.
Another problem that I get is that I spend now more time working with Lightroom, something I really hate.

My Canon 30D (best camera I've ever owned) always overexposed just the perfect amount. I think I got the best pictures I've ever taken with that thing.
