Country Road Project
« on: April 28, 2011, 01:23:10 PM »
This will be interesting on going project. It will be much easier than a single themed project that has one type of image protrayed.
Here, I can take "anything" that happens to be off of a country road.
So expect a variety of subjects and lenses used.

As always, comments are welcome.

I love these b&w shots because the choice of the subject matter and the framing captures the sense of the countryside--simplicity and honesty (the gas station), desultoriness and slight decay (the old shed), unpretentious decor (the white fence lined driveway). Very enjoyable to look at; I've been going through them again and again. What camera did you use?--not that it affects anything about the quality here.

Thanks for the kind words...

I am using for the B&W images:  Contax G1 with the Carl Zeiss G 45mm f/2 T* with Fuji Acros 100, Post 6/7  are with Fuji Neopan 400, which I will be shooting for a while anyway (I have 100' to shoot through  ;))

Fuji Neopan 400 tends to blow highlights a bit easier than Fuji Acros 100, so I am trying, "Stand Development" on the next roll. (1m agitation at the beginning, then no agitation for the next 59m in Rodinal 1:100)

That set works for me in a way the others don't. Nothing wrong with them, mind you, but this particular set stands out for the image quality as well as composition. Nice work!

Thanks rparmar

This set was easier to edit, I had blown it in developing  (not enough Developer - 5ml not 6ml, and over developed by 2m)
My last roll turned out much better as far as good negative density and tonal range

I thought with staying in a 4 +/-  mile radius, I would run of photo Ops... But, I am just looking at the common stuff, and finding I have plenty of subjects to work with.

Contax? I thought you shot a Leica and that's why you are called M-5? I guess I tend to jump to conclusions or I have missed something. Contax was Leica's historic competitor and mortal enemy. I had never even heard of the G2, so I found this little snippet from Ken Rockwell: "The Contax G2 is the world's most advanced rangefinder camera. It is a superbly refined electronic, autofocus 35mm camera with the world's best optics. It also offers auto exposure, auto loading, advance and rewind, and TTL metering for both flash and ambient light." It was built between 1996-2003. Wow, that camera must have set you back a pretty penny!

@traveler_101:  Yes, sure is.  It's about everything that some of us in here have wanted for quite some years now, - shall we say for 8-10 years, at least?   :D    A Digital True Rangefinder!  :) :)

More than a few were somewhat relieved when rumors reached about that half a year+ ago.  We have now learned what this camera is all about, it's handsome retro appearance, sound man-machine operativeness & it's image producing qualities.  Due to market mechanisms which us mortally cannot reasonably conquer, quite many, among these mr. cosinaphile, are still without this machine.  (We are all praying this grievance our dear fellow colleague is now suffering might come to an end, better sooner than later).  :) :)

I have the G1 with Modified ROM to adjust the Zoom VF for the 35mm  and allow the 21mm to communicate with the camera... sadly, the G2 (small upgrade from the G1) sells for $600.00 just the body. The G1 sells for $200.00, and is 98% the same camera.  I could have gotten the G2/45mm for $900.00 from the same guy, but, then, the P/G3 would not have the funds to get it...  I sold the Leica M5 and Zeiss ZM 50mm f/1.5 C-Sonnar to get the Panasonic G3 AND replace the M5... another M w/lens (any model) was still too much after pre-odering the P/G3. But the C/G1 with the 45mm f/2 was $660.00 shipped from a photographer in Florida.

It is really a great camera to use..

And, has the same amount of electronics as any Digital camera. the moving parts internally are the motors to use the Screw drive to focus and wind the film.

Peter, these are great & your theme is very interesting by showing a varied slice of country life.
Keep them coming!
BTW you B&W shots are superb, do you process your own films? I shall have to look into shooting some film soon.

Excellent Work in MHO!  8)

Thank you

Yes, I did develop them... I believe in Rodinal 1:100 (3ml per 100mm) Stand for 1 hour...
But, 1:25 (12.5ml per 100ml) for Time/Temp per chart, will also work fine also...
I shot Fuji Neopan 400 at 320... But, a little ISO experimenting is needed with any developer...
And using only one developer with the same dilution until you find the right ISO for you.

I don't have a film camera at the moment... but plan to get another one in a little while... Maybe an Olympus OM4T, with a 28mm or 35mm,  or a Nikon FE2 with a 28 or 35 (I need the 1/2000 speed.. I shoot 400 at 640 and f/11 or f/16)

It depends how you look at it.

I used my Canon FL 50mm f/1.4 (a film camera lens) on my Panasonic G3.

It has been like a London Fog day, all day.

I shoot monochrome JPGs with +2 contrast and -2 noise. With no other noise reduction.

I like these a lot. You're doing what I aspire to do, only better! I'm English but spend my vacation time in the less-travelled (at least by tourists) parts of the US. Here is one of my efforts in this direction, taken in Straubville, North Dakota in August 2010:

Thanks Spooky,

Living near and around a large farm community, I,  at 1st thought my photo ops where almost gone. So, I figured why not take pictures of the stuff I pass, or live near.
It seems to work.  Sometimes it is a challenge to get an idea going.  But I like a few genre's so, I can photograph something else.

This project really is something, wow!

It's like a mind of project I've had but couldn't really figure out how I would like to have it.

Is it okay if I post some pictures from the swedish country road in this thread, or do you want me to do my own, Peter? :)

Have a nice day!
Best wishes to you all!
