a arch or "fragment of a gothic or   roman building   was often built to enhance a garden or grounds... often made to look like a ruin, but sometimes built more symmetrically and "neatly" depending on the taste of the patron, also they were made as an entrance to garfdens or grounds

the ones that appear as medieval or roman but built from the late 18 to early 20 c were sometimes called follys
