Panasonic G3--Real World Review with Full Size images
« on: July 13, 2011, 05:19:58 PM »
This is an on going review, so as I single out specific things to concentrate on, like ISO, or Camera settings, or Silkpix options for the RAW developing, or whatever I can think of to show off/test the G3, (and by your suggestions), I will work on it...

Panasonic G3, Panasonic G 20mm f/1.7
My Son getting a hair cut:  ISO 640 with a little luminous noise reduction in ACDSee Pro 3
My Wife/ and one of me: ISO 200 NO NR

It is getting late for me, been a long day..
But, here are a few from today....

Converted the RAW to a TIFF w/o a any post, then I edited the TIFFs in ACDSee Pro 3, and Converted them to JPGS.. I then reduced the compression from 100 to 90 (not percentage) to make the 13mb - 18mb files be under 5mb for uploading here.

All my photo's where shot in: "RAW/JPG" at full size for both.
I just have the RAW conversions here.

OK, We had a few stops today, so I brought the  Panasonic G3 equipped with the Panasonic G 20mm f/1.7

1st Stop: Hair Cut:
My Son gets a Hair Cut.. At ISO 640... I have a few, but they are very similar, so I just posted one.. I used the Touch Screen "Pin Point" for taking the photo by just touching the screen anywhere you want it focus on.. very fast... it took a picture before I lifted my finger off the screen.

2nd stop: Eats:
At the restaurant, I also used the Touch Screen "Pin-Point" for taking all the pictures... Expect of me, My son took that one, and used the standard release button. These are all at ISO 200.

I have some more from this morning of the Downtown Morresville area, and a few snaps from a walk-about a few blocks in the residential area.
Those at ISO 160, I will post a reply in this thread with some of the images.

Since my habit has been with the Auto Eye Sensor of the G1,  I am having to get used to the change.. it is not a big deal, just an adjustment in workflow.

I find using the back wheel convenient, I use my left eye for the EVF. It is just far enough right to allow my thumb to change values with a turn, or a push/turn. Although it a tad less protruding than the G1, is does have a nice knurled edge for a good on the palm of my thumb.

These are full size when you click 2 times on the image
I did edit these with whatever they needed, if you want a un-processed image, I can provide one, that I can upload at different gallery for download.
If you want to mess with it.

If you feel I over did it somewhere in editing, just say so, and on what photo, I will rework it with less of whatever you think I overdid.

an odd request... I really wanna play around with RAW files on light room from the G3, is there somewhere you can post them (preferably high ISO stuff, those 640s would work fine)
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

I can do the JPGS, Not RW2 or TIFFs
The Upload does a JPG conversion....
I will upload the JPGs that shoot at the same time...
Here is  from the Barber

Panasonic G3 JPGs OOC

click on an image. on that image, hover over the upper left corner, and chose  "download/original"

The Galleries I use does not have a RAW file as an option.

Nr 2 is great :)

Pictures are sharp and have nice colors, but when enlarged there is a lot of noise.
But yeah, I'm a noise freak.

I usually have the G1 at -2 on noise, but with the G3, I left it at "0" to see what the default level is. It isn't bad at all compared to the G1. It is a good improvement...But, at -2, [my normal setting], noise is nicely controlled and looks good.

I will have images at different settings later... right now, I am doing [real world] images.. IE: no controlled shooting, just like you would go out and take a bunch of photographs on a walk-about with general camera settings. That's why I am leaving it at the default "0" settings for S/C/Srp/NR.
Plus, if you go the sample gallery I supplied a link in post 2, you will find full size non edited JPGs to download and mess around with.

The photo of your son at the barbers is great - captured the moment perfectly. Looks like he was having far more fun than I have when I'm "getting my ears lowered"!

In fact it's so good I think I'd crop it to portrait, removing the other pair, and then frame it.

There IS a surprising amount of noise but it doesn't detract really, just an observation.

I agree, but as I said in an earlier post, I have the [in camera] NR on "0", not "-2" the preferred setting, which actually cleans up better than a "0" setting that does apply a small amount of despite being a "0" setting..

Some from Outside at the base ISO of 160

I did whatever I needed to present a finished photo, If you want to download the original non-edited JPG from the RAW file, go to Post 2 for the link. Having a JPG [Made] from the RAW, will not have any In-Camera JPG processing. I do have the In-Camera JPGS that does have the JPG processing engine applied, if interested.

Camera aimed down, so the buildings perspective will be off... This is a non-cropped image

Look at mail boxes in the full size image.

I see that on some of my shots too. I am no sure I really care. What would you do, screw up the noise filter?

I will do a set of photo's with the [in camera] noise set from -2 to +2 at different ISO's, in JPG, but all other parameters will be at "0" This will be my Friday project. I will also post the full size images w/o any editing, so you see the OOC JPG on "Standard" photo mode, will all settings at "0" except the Noise Reduction.

Just a few quickies at ISO 160 JPG with the [in-camera] noise reduction on -2

The noise is much better controlled at -2 than at "0", as is the G1, and probably the other G series also.

I  sure the G3 noise reduction process is different from other G's, And I think it is a good compromise between detail and noise. It could always be better though.

The big test will be with the 400mm at ISO 800 though.  But it is better than the G1 so far. the noise does have a different look though.

You guys that hate all noise would hate film, even Kodachrome, there will always be noise, just like different films, you pick your subject for the noise that you may expect, for the best results. This model seems to have a high degree of detail, what we want at high ISO, right ?... well, then something will have to give way to get it.
Maybe in a generation or 2 of sensors, we have both, "0" noise at any ISO and fine detail.

I will do a high ISO samples on Friday Night... Then we can see how it does.

The red looks a bit off, but I think that's a Panasonic problem.

ISO 640, RW2, No NR in SlikPix as far as I know. still learning this software

WOW,
What a difference developing the RW2 in SlikPix made on the high ISO...

It looks like I need to use SlikPix after all, much better than converting to a TIFF then developing that as the RAW

Image 122  RW2

EDIT ADDED THE JPG EDIT for comparison..
Edit done with my free copy of Capture One
  :)
NO Noise Reduction, In-camera NR at "0" on Standard Photo (used to be the Film Mode)
Color difference is because in Slikpix I used a Fuji Film color version for above Image ^^^^^^^

Image 98 JPG [In Camera at the same time as the RAW files

Ummmm
Here is the same photo at ISO 640.

One is from a TIFF conversion before any editing is done, the embedded photo has a little Luminous Noise reduction in ACDsee Pro 3. Which I used to develop the TIFF...

The other is from using Slikpix Raw Developer. With no NR as far as I now, then I converted to a JPG.

RW2 > TIFF in Slikpix (no developing, just a straight conversion)
TIFF developed in ACDSee Pro 3, then converted to a JPG.

RW2 Developed in Slikpix, then converted to a JPG.

I believe that Slikpix does a much better job.

Good to see you're getting some great results from the G3  M5.

I've had mine for about 3 weeks and have just about given up on it - the controls are a pain in the behind and the image gain over the G1 negligible so far.

The touch screen has a mind of it's own and the buttons cut down to the extent they aren't worth bothering with. Might be fine with native lenses but working with legacy glass in near to a no-no in my book.

have more time on my hands at the moment to get out with it so hopefully will eat my words in a week or so..........

I having learning how to develop the RW2 in Slikpix, and the camera does apply different JPG setting in camera, I guess the larger/newer sensor requires that. But high ISO RAW is better than the G1 by at least 1.5 stops. Hang in there, it can deliver great IQ, Yes, the lack of more dedicated buttons is a pain at times... But, to market it to more people, that is how it goes. I like the touch screen though...

The silkypix stuff looks better. It seems your getting a lot of detail from it, all you need is to figure out how to process the different ISO. I have a couple of buddies that are getting amazing stuff with the g3 and lightroom 3. Not 2 hours ago I saw an ISO 3200 that blew my underwear off. Ill ask for permission to post...

It would be nice is ACDSee or Capture One would provide camera updates for the new G3 RW2 files..
Capture One seems like a good user friendly program also, with a great engine for IQ.. but uses Libraries as LR.

I am working on ISO 1000 RW2/JPG that just back from a short country ride today, with my big and huge 400mm f/5.5. All hand held.
I will post a RW2 and the corresponding JPG in the same reply for comparison.
