New Panasonic Sensor Has Gapless Design
« on: June 28, 2010, 06:27:07 PM »
http://43rumors.com/ft4-new-panasonic-sensor-with-gapless-design/

Finally we received a small but very good info from trusted sources about the next Panasonic sensor. The new sensor will have gapless Micro-lenses.
Canon has been the first to deliver such a sensor with the Canon 50D (and lately with the Canon 7D and EOS-1D Mark IV). Chuck Westfall, Technical Advisor at Canon USA said that “noise levels are expected to be 1 to 1.5 stops better in the high ISO range” (Source: Rob Galbraith).

The Panasonic sensor is ready for mass-production so it is very likely that we will see that sensor inside the new GH2 (launch to be expected late September at Photokina). We didn’t get any further details yet but the info we post here today came from our very best sources!

Good news!

Looks like this might lead to much better high ISO performance from the GH2 and the GF2 when they are released.

I will get one only if it has an in-body IS.

as all the benefits of  cutting edge sensor design are eventually implemented in a single sensor we will see amazing developments

back lit [ connects on the back ] and gapless and other stuff
speculated in sensor design articles ive seen at rumors etc [ pannys work]  will all converge at some point

cant wait!!!!!

We'll probably see this in their new fixed lens compact.

I will get one only if it has an in-body IS.

then you will not get one...I know for a FACT, that all the new lenses at photokina are gonna have IS
if you're gonna crop the crap of your full frame pic, why not buy a cropped sensor to start with??

Now that I think about it, this doesn't necessarily mean the GH2 cant have in body IS

I just heard it for the second time yesterday (I wrote it somewhere else), because of the gapless micro-lenses, new sensor design and revamped venus engine, the GH2 is gonna go all the way to ISO 25600 with a clean as a whistle (well..as clean as it can be I guess...) ISO 3200

I can't possibly believe that. I would maybe say ISO 6400 would be usable in some situations at most. I don't think anyone has that good of a capability on a sensor that isn't full frame or larger now.

maybe they're talking about jpegs, god knows the EPL1 dishes out one mean ISO 6400 jpeg so why not? I didn't believe the ISO 25600 at first but then the LX5 came out...which , for a sensor that small, it does a fairly clean ISO 1600 (compared to any other p &s) and tops out at Iso 12800. The GH@ with the much larger 4/3 sensor should be able to go to 25600 and the ISO 3200 could be the cleanest (for m4/3) yet.
let me dream damn you! ;) ;D

I'd love to see what the noise looks like at ISO 25600 also....

but if they offer 25000 iso as an option ,then the  4 stop lower gain 3200 might be pretty! and reaql clean
