GX1 pictures were too soft without NR and sharpness adjustment
« on: December 10, 2011, 05:05:20 PM »
I got much closer results to the E-P3 or G3 with NR set to Low and also it seemed shapness did better at +1.  At default people looked fuzzy.

Can you post samples...?

I set my G3 at -2 on NR under the "Photo Settings" (was Film settings), I would set it there and keep it there.

Yes, I'd love to see some samples as well. That way we can help you figure out the problem a little more.

I dunno...Do you know how to post in the gallery? Itll be easier to pixel peep it and you can post it bigger. From what I see here the background seems to be in focus.

what lens are you using? panny lenses have IS
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

Yeah, the EXIF data would be very useful here.

Actually, that sounds incredibly complicated even from my perspective. I'll write a tutorial on this soon.

the 1st 2 are at 1/20 all but the last are at 1/30, and the last is at 1/60... does  the P/25mm f/1.4 have OIS? 1/30 is still a bit slow for a 50mm fov. and 1/60 should be better, but at ISO 1000, and the the picture being a not a close picture of her face, could be contributing to the softness also...

Internally, I'd put the Photo Style Sharpness on "0", and the NR on "-2"... but the EXIF does not show that with my Firefox plug in to read EXIF....

Yeah, those shutter speeds are far too slow to get any sharp results handheld, even with IS on.

the pana 1.4 has no IS. I have movement even at 1/60. minimum speed on this lens should be 1/80, youll se a night and day difference. Im about to make a chrismas thread using only the leica at at least 1/80, everything is fantastically sharp (plus the new firmware really does improve IQ on the GH2).

ISO 1600 on jpeg settings also contribute to softness. But the clear problem here is shutter speed, the first one was also shot at f3.2, if you had used f1.4 that would have been 1/100 of a sec easy (or it could have been 1/80 at ISO 1250), problem solved. If you really want to test your theory, set the camera down on a table if you dont have a tripod, manual focus on whatever and shoot it a ISO 160 using the timer.

that excellent advice  for min ss , because of the 2 x crop factor doubles the effect of hand tremors etc the ol reciprocal rule  of one ovr the focal legnth holds true for the effective focal legnth  so if a nifty fifty [50mm] on 35mm film was to be shot at about 1\50 -1\60 sec  to insure sharpness under avg conditions
then a 50 on m43 needs  about 1\100 secmore or less

now personally ive thought those guideline too liberal i used to try to shoot a 50mm on full frame at at least 1\125  for a crisp shot on my oly ep1 with
ibis i could get away with less at times

sufficient SS is essential to getting a sharp shot ... but ill accept less than tack sharp in street shots once in a while , sometimes lack of sharpness helps make the point in rare instances

Th suggestion to use the timer on a table and run a test is a good one , as i may be buying this camera at some point i'm  interested to know how this all turn's out
