The First Digital Camera (1975)
« on: June 10, 2011, 08:46:50 AM »

It was a camera that didn’t use any film to capture still images - a camera that would capture images using a CCD imager and digitize the captured scene and store the digital info on a standard cassette.  It took 23 seconds to record the digitized image to the cassette.  The image was viewed by removing the cassette from the camera and placing it in a custom playback device.  This playback device incorporated a cassette reader and a specially built frame store.  This custom frame store received the data from the tape, interpolated the 100 captured lines to 400 lines, and generated a standard NTSC video signal, which was then sent to a television set.

But then how would you get the image off of the cassette and on to Facebook?

Hehe, pretty awesome though.  Makes you wonder what people will be thinking of our current bleeding edge technology in 40 years.

I was like 6 years old back then!  I had no idea they could allready do that back then  :o Very good find, for him to still have that camera for over more than 30 years and then "Outside of the patent, there was no public disclosure of our work until 2001" and he's not kidding either so it was Kodak who could have started the digital photography era much sooner but didnt see the potential initially ?

was the word ISO even around in 1975?
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

ISO stands for International Standards Organization. Its use with photographic film is due to several standards treating sensitivity (ISO 5800:1987, ISO 6:1993, ISO 2240:2003). The ISO scale corresponds to the ASA (American Standards Association) film scale which has been around for quite a while.
Not sure if this device was ever calibrated for sensitivity of if separate sensitivity settings were available.

Ah that's right, it used to be known as ASA.
