They are dead set on using that new 36 mp on their next ft
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

Looks like the translucent mirror has been a great success for Sony.

I still find it strange that the a77 has an EVF.  What is the point of the translucent mirror, besides phase focus?  Is phase focus really worth throwing in a translucent mirror?  Reviewers are already saying that the NEX7 has better IQ than the a77 because there is no translucent mirror in the way.  Remember the original alpha55 commercial that bragged about translucent mirror advantage because there was no mirror flip up flicker or live view lag.

PD seems to be still good for video, since CD AF needs to brute-force its sharpest focus by moving front-back, which can be a problem with large aperture lenses (the hunting will become obvious with the shallow DOF).
CD AF on the other side is immune to front- and back-focus, since the minuscule differences in distance between the PD and imaging sensors, that can make a mess with focusing in DSLRs, are completely eliminated.

The Canon Pellex (FT body), had a translucent mirror in the 60's, then in the Canon F1 HS in the 70's, then in the EOS RT (630 body) in the late 80's, and in a ID model also for 10fps...
(my dates are just approximate)

You  loose 30-40% of the transmission to gain, what, 5fps and loose an f/stop to the Film/Sensor.....

You may gain Phase Detection and better live-view... but, is the lose worth it?

If it had a real viewfinder you wouldn't be able to see anything, right?

No, just no electronic liveview, except for the models that have a second sensor in be pentaprism.
With I thought was better idea than a tanslusant mirror.

Canon, Nikon, Pentax, if they have any live view, it is only on the LCD only. As far as I know.

Indeed. Pentax K-r raises the mirror and opens the shutter when in LiveView, the image in the OVF disappears, and one on the LCD appears. AF becomes much slower, since Phase Detect can not be used, and all lenses are very heavy for quick Contrast Detect AF. CDAF, the only possible AF method in LiveView, is however much more precise than PDAF, which is a partial workaround for K-r's tendency to severely front-focus in incandescent light.
No Focus Confirmation is available in LV however, as in E-Px, whose only AF system is CDAF.
The big advantage of the translucent mirror is that both LiveView and PDAF are possible. Focus Confirm should also be available, but I can not confirm that myself. Also, fast PD AF should be available when shooting video.
The disadvantages are that a part of the light is permanently deflected from the sensor, and that another piece of glass is in the optical path, contributing to spherical aberration.

When the first Canon EOS pellicle film camera arrived Herbert Keppler did a comparision between it and standard EOS film camera to compare sharpness. This was easy to do since both cameras had the same "sensor". Canon wasn't too happy and I heard they raised hell. The mag had to keep Keppler because he was the most popular writer at the mag (think Popular Photography magazine by then). Wish I could find that test again.

I wanted the new EOS so badly - untill seeing those comparison pics. Has anyone done a similar comparison between slt and stndard Sony DSLR? Anyone know if the Sony slt is any better or do you still take such a hit on sharpness?
thanks
barondla
