"(FT4) Ricoh is the first MicroFourThirds competitor
October 26, 2009 Micro Four Thirds 7 Comments

Image of the Ricoh Caplio GX200 (not the rumored camera! We hope to receive some pictures of the new camera soon)

-

Dear readers,

this time we do not publish Olympus or Panasonic rumor, we have a Ricoh rumor. But the thought it will interest you to know that Ricoh will become the first MicroFourThirds competitor. They will release a compact mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses. How do we know that? Our trusted sources confirmed that (and also some new ones).

We have only few informations:

- Announcement around November 10-12 and in store on December (99% chance the rumor will become truth)

- APS-C sensor (99%)

- Very similar in design and size to the Ricoh Caplio GX200 (80%)

- They will have their own mount…Not the rumored Pentax K-mount! (70%)

- It will use the new Epson EVF! (50%)

Some of our sources told us that the camera will beat the E-P1 and Panasonic GF1 specs.

As soon as we receive more specs and hopefully images we will post it on 43rumors."

Excited does not begin to define the emotion it brings me... as it should everybody!

The joy of looking through a view finder while following the action allows that micro second response to hit the shutter!

This could be the perfect marriage of old school manual lenses on killer new school camera body technology!

It would be cool if you could swap out the sensor and/or the lens.  The way it is now, the body is just a LCD screen with a couple buttons.  The real cost is in buying the lens/sensor deal.  Maybe they will make the lenses interchangeable without the sensor box attached eventually, but it looks like they came up with this solution to avoid the dust and sensor damage.

I'm guessing they came up with this system to reduce their cost of manufacturing and retooling.  Not so much to give the customer added flexibility.   Most point-n-shoot customers just want good pictures and a lot of zooming magnification, they don't even know what bokeh is.  Now Ricoh can make a small sensor, small lens combo and claim 15x zoom to compete against Canon G11.  Or, go with bigger sensor, higher quality lens, not much zoom and compete with the likes of an X1.  But, not spend any money manufacturing a new body or additional marketing to promote another camera.

Most people who are using a zoom don't care about shallow depth of field, so a small sensor is advantageous if you can keep the noise down at high ISO.  If they make a zoom lens that is fixed at F2.8, with a small sensor to zoom from 35mm to 200mm equivalent, and then go with a fast 50mm F1.4 and FF sensor, you have the entire kit to fill most shooting styles.

If I could have a 35-200mm zoom fixed at F2.8 with massive DOF and at least ISO 6400 without noise, my life would be so much easier since I shoot mostly indoor sports events in bad lighting.  And then provide art filters to simulate fancy bokeh from famous lenses, tilt-shift, etc...

It does give rise to an interesting potential. A left-handed camera body part.

That's a good idea. Do you think that Ricoh publish the specification of their interface in oder to let other manufacturer implement lens/sensor modules? Or maybe they would offer a sensor module with a lens mount by them self. Hope that somebody at Ricoh reads your suggestions.

I've never used a Ricoh. But agree that the menu interface may easily be better than the one of the E-P1.

look into the ricohs they make the best point and shoots on earth , check out the grdIII with a 28 1.9 they priduce stunning pics , and black and white that will astound you with its tone and clarity

the gx 200 and grd 3 are pocket cameras for pros and amaeturs  who give a damn about a good camera, the design and implimation ,build quality  lens quality , leaves the other makers in the dusts

the gx 200 has noise issues at  400 and above  but at iso 64, 100 and 200 its a great machine  the s10 sensor for the new modular grx is essentially the same lens as the gx200 a 24-70 2.5 -4.4
but with the newer sensor like the grd3 , with wonderful  high iso performance
the gxr modular machines launches with 2 lense/ sensor units, the S10,a 24-70 2.5-4.4  zoom [point and shoot sensor] and the A12 module   a 50 2.5 macro lens with an aps-c sensor!

how about a full frame sensor with a leica m mount, a screw mount,  or even a universal mount like the adaptall mount from tamron, 10 megapixels would be fine , just a box with lens mount and  a sensor, they could sell them
for 600- 800 dollars each , it would turn the world of photography upside down

Unfortunately Ricoh never quite grasps what part of the market they should be entering.
