And why shoot M-lenses on a Ricoh, instead of a NEX or an E-Px?

because its a native module designed for the mount from scratch an opposed as an adapter to jury rig up a lens and camera from w different systems

only three compnies have done this in history for digitalshooters

leica ,of course

epson with the rd1

ricoh m mount module for the gxr

there is a profound diffeerence, whether that difference matters to you is another story :)

I'm not trying to discourage you, just wondering what makes a native M-mount more desirable than an adapted one. I am of course excluding Leica's own implementation as it uses RF coupling with it.
So, is using GXR with M-mount gonna be any different from using a NEX or an m4/3 camera with an adapter?
I am including the NEX on purpose, because of their quite innovative MF Peaking feature.

yes it will be different , the modules design is purposed to use m mount lenses  ,the processing engine the exposure and other shooting parameters will all be to get the best user experence out of using m mount manual glass , the sensor chosen and how it is implimented  to use m mount across a spectrum of fovs is something ricoh engineers will not ignore, i also see that you dont need a contraption of unknow quality and infinity focus corectness on your camera  to allow m mount as a benefit , , the high quality m mount is on the camera itself , a more elegant logical and purer solution than using a contraption , err i mean adapter.
furthermore to shoot with adapted glass you are forced to bypass most features of exposure etc to allow
such adapted to be used at all , the menus  of my cameras says it all:....." shoot without lens"

that said ...
i am a strong believer in adapted glass for micro 4 \3 , back in 2009 i made a custom adapter for a nikon 50 mm
and for pentax 110 lenses before adapters were being manufactured for them and since that time have invested in :   pk... leica screw{2} leica m[2] pentax 110[4] 42screw...rollei slr ...md...fd...contax g....exacta...nikonf....etc
i believe in adapted m43, i also believe a camera concieved from scratch as an m mount to be m mount machine
will be a superior shooting solution to a camera rigged to allow it ..neither the ep1 or the gf1 allows me to mf as easily or as transparently as i would like , it reqire 3 button pushes to get th gf1 to 10 x mag one more to recompose... dont get me started on the ep1 mf  implimentation of button pushing ...
i do not know how good the ricoh solution will be , but they are widely considered to be the most logical and purest control user experence for any cameras made .... that and the quality is the reason for their cult status in japan and the high regard their held in in the rest of the world for those who have actually had the pleasure of using one.
adash you are level headed, but many fanboys of other systems continually mock the ricoh cameras..
its a favorite hobby for many across the internet for those who have nt a clue what their talking about
ricoh s purchase of pentax makes a bid to spread ricoh goodness and world class quality  and intelligent menus and controls to a wider segment , the gxr m mount module will accomplish this also

it will also be nice to have this wonderful module on the gxr where twice as quickly as  the fastest hands
can change a lens, a module can be swapped , from m mount apsc ...to apsc af macro "50" to apsc af "28'..
to quality compact "24-72" to smaller sensor 28-300 it is an amazing compact solution
nothing on the planet will allow a shooter who want versitality to travel lighter , or switch optic \shooting solutions faster

the nex peaking feature is a very cool thing, but i cant stand the tiny nex cmera itself and the use of m mount
on the nex with its almost button less and dialess control setut almost seems an anathma to me , the nex couls have been a great camera , with a different design anad control setup , but to me , the nex with its soda can
kit lens on a deck of card body seems an absurdity to me , i hope ricoh has the foresite to have a peaking type feature too ....in spite of the innovative peaking nex feature , adapted optics on the ep1 and gf1 though not perfect  seems more elegant to me.

I like the way Ricoh approaches  using other lenses (err all lenses) on the GXR.
A dedicated Sensor made for the lens that is in front of it.. Like Fuji did for the X100.
Although all the small semsor p/s have this also.. but it is such a small sensor...This Idea with lager sensors is good thinking...

Now for a FF module for -- one of the big 4??

the m mount module should have been fulll frame , ricoh rarely dissapoints me
but here i think they had an error in judgment, full frame would hsve been game changing , and launched ricoh ahead tremendously in the eyes and camera bags of seroius shooters everywhere

the module will be great but it could have been absolutely frikin awesome

@adash... in this thread [ and a while ago] , you asked the legitimate question about how a gxr m mount module would be better than using legacy glass adapted on mirrorless system cameras, i attempted an answer above , having no specifics on what the module would be like   , but guessing based on what shooters desired and what native lensmount cameras from leica and epson offered ,who prior to the icoh gxr m mount, were the only makers of such machines , along with speculation on new technologies  and possible inclusion......

but here it is now , some specific info on this incredible new machine.....

this is from dp review , its really worth a read....price will be 649 usd  ... production will begin at 3000 units a month

1) The newly adopted APS-C size CMOS sensor expands possibilities for high resolution and imaging power.

•The adoption of a CMOS sensor with an optimized micro lens layout makes it possible to secure sufficient brightness levels even in the peripheral areas of the image. •The CMOS sensor used is 23.6mm × 15.7mm (APS-C size). It enables the shooting of high-quality images with smooth tone gradations as well as high definition and low noise.
2) Compatibility with a wide variety of lenses, including Leica M mount lenses.

•Compatible with the Leica M mount, GXR MOUNT A12 can, of course, handle M-mount lenses, and if a conversion adapter is used many more types of mounts can also be accommodated.
•A checking device is included for use in confirming whether or not your lenses are physically compatible.
3) Diverse new functions maximize the potential of the lens itself

•for the distinctive characteristics of many different lenses, GXR MOUNT A12 can independently correct coloring at the corners. Color shading correction is possible in a -4 to +4 range for both R and B.•Peripheral illumination correction is possible in a -3 to +3 range.
•A distortion correction function is provided to correct for the distortion that tends to occur in the lens periphery.
The photographer can select barrel and pincushion distortion and specify “strong,” “medium,” or “weak” for each.
•A glass optical filter was adopted and made as thin as possible. It increases periphery image quality and suppresses field curvature.4) High-precision focusing

A focus-assist function has been included in an effort to raise the accuracy of manual focusing. The photographer can select from two modes and check the focus by strengthening outlines and contrast.•Magnifying the screen image while shooting is an effective technique for focusing. The magnification can be done not only in the center but throughout the image. In addition, the image quality for 4x and 8x magnification has been further enhanced. The area to be magnified can be moved using the directional pad.
5) Two shutter methods are featured: newly developed focal plane shutter and electronic shutter

With the focal plane shutter, settings of 1/4000 sec. to 180 sec. are possible.
•With the electronic shutter, settings of 1/8000 sec. to 1 sec. are possible
, and the  photographer can shoot without worrying about shutter noise and vibration
6) The wide range of functionality that characterizes the GXR series

•My Settings enables a wide range of shooting functions to be specified in an instant. For the setting information storage, six patterns can now be stored in the body’s My Settings Box and six patterns can be stored in the SD card. This, along with the ability to change shooting conditions, further expands the photographer’s world of photo expression.
•In manual exposure mode, the shutter speeds B (bulb) and T (time) can be selected. With B, the exposure continues while the shutter release button is pressed, and with T, the shutter release button is pressed to start and end the exposure. For both B and T, the exposure is automatically ended when 180 seconds have elapsed.
Information on the lens used can be put in the EXIF information. In the editing of My Settings information, lens name, focal length, and F value can be entered.•New scene mode options have been added for the easy enjoyment of a wide range of photo expression. The five new options are soft focus, cross process, toy camera, miniaturize, and high contrast B&W. The photographer can create a unique image by just pressing the shutter release button.
•An electronic level utilizing an acceleration sensor.
•An image flag function to enable the quick display of specific images from among those in the camera. Up to 20 images can be flagged.
•For the exterior, we utilized die cast magnesium, which has a strong track record in the GR series, and we covered the surface with a corrosion-resistant "pear-skin" coating. The end result is a body with durability, light weight, and a superior feel in hand. •It is possible to shoot 1280 × 720 pixel HD movies.

Not bad, quite a few improvements. Sounds like a great sensor, with a lot of possibilities of correcting CA, distortion, etc.
This:
"A focus-assist function has been included in an effort to raise the accuracy of manual focusing. The photographer can select from two modes and check the focus by strengthening outlines and contrast."
sounds great too!
Should be of amazing IQ, but I did not find info about IBIS. (Yes, I am a fanboy, and yes, I know that IS is not essential for a good photograph)

good question , the small sensor gxr modules that i currently have the
"24-72"mm 2.4-4.4 and the "28-300"mm 3.5-5.6 both have ois but i dont know if the large sensor [apsc] modules like the "50"mm macro  or the '28" have ois

i really like ois too

lots of further info at dp review along with sample images

And why shoot M-lenses on a Ricoh, instead of a NEX or an E-Px?
the ricoh module for the leica m has no AA filter in front of the sensor. Just like an m9. That's why. That's the module to buy right there...its the only APS C sensor in the world with no AA filter (except for the 2 million dollars sigma)
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

Sold my Leica M8, but kept most of the lenses, with the intent of mounting them on the G1/GF1.  Looks like here's another investment!  GAS, as it's referred to in some forums!

Thanks for mentioning that, I didn't know it. That's a good reason indeed!

I wish that AA and IR filters could be easily removed from existing cameras....

ive been shooting with the gxr and voightlsnder lenses and some russian glass , , wonderful peaking feature in 2 flavors
regular color with white shimmer highlights at high contrast junctures , and a middle grey...black and white view mode with only perimeters around objects
kind of like greyscale polaorization with focus peaking turning zone of focus object margins white, used when its difficult to see
