Patent: Canon RAW Video
« on: January 29, 2012, 09:39:50 AM »
Canon has filed for RAW Video recording. it will work on current CMOS sensors, and can record at 2K and 4k (2048x4096). 12bit sensor output. And can output to a CF card.

Not a whole lot out yet on when a DSLR and/or when the C300 Professional EOS Mount Video will incorporate it. If it will does at all.

Read More Here on the RAW Patent
from EOSHD Website

But, RAW, opens up a whole world of editing corrections not available right now.

The EOSHD C300 can record in 4K, bit it can't "Output" in 4K. So, this a nice advance. So, even though the C300 is do ship in March, and it is not specked with RAW output,

Seems to silently imply another Cxxx model in the future with RAW 4K output.

Kind of confused by this. We have over 200 Raw still variations. Are they patented? So is this patent sayng no one else can use Canon's video Raw? Which if it works like still cameras no one would anyway. Even Canon doesn't use the same Raw for any of their still cameras. Every still camera uses a different Raw. Or is the patent saying no other  video Raw can exist? If so this is a VERY BAD development for video. No 3rd party support ( without huge cash payments) and no competition. With 200 Raw types on the market surprised it can even be patented. What about fast firing Raw still cameras like the Sony NEX? How slow can it go and still be video?
thanks

Camera makers do patent their raw stills extensions, its just never that big a news. Very few have patented a raw video extension.
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

No, It sounds like they just invented a RAW to output to 4K. The C300 can only output in 2K, in a Non RAW file AFAIK,  though it records in 4K.
If that makes any sense. I don't understand the tech side myself.

RAW video seems pretty much to be the future. Personally I think H.264 is completely ok for anything up to full 1080 HD on 50 inch TVs but everyone always wants more and there is no question that RAW opens up a lot of doors.

This is pretty much Canon trying to catch up with RED, Canon seems to move glacially slow on innovation. RED already has RAW video and Canon's $16K "digital cinema" monstrosity (which hasn't began to ship) doesn't. My money is on Panasonic to introduce something that addresses both 4K and RAW in the next 12 months. Sony and Panasonic run on a different clock.
