Panasonic plans to replace the LX5 ...
« on: October 03, 2011, 05:03:38 AM »
While the LX5 has not sold as well as the LX3, the replacement may have a lager sensor. A 1" in stead of a 1/63" (Just under 3/4" sensor).

Could this be a bit of "fixed lens" competition for the Nikon V1? Which has a  similar size sensor.

Well, since this is also the model used for Leica's Compact, I can see the larger sensor as a plus...It still is a fixed zoom p/s though.

Leica has stated that they are planning a mirrorless camera that will fit in between their X and M line.  Could it be a rebranded Panasonic GH Pro whatever?

http://leicarumors.com/2011/09/16/leicas-ceo-talks-mirrorless-again.aspx/

"We are at the borderline of compact-system cameras already, with the Leica X1 and Leica M-System, and it's pretty obvious that, at one point, we are going to offer something in between," said Mr Schopf.

On Micro Four Thirds devices, Mr Schopf said: "They have compact bodies and huge lenses in front. I feel a little bit stressed by that design, to be honest."

I think the interviewer is using micro four thirds as a generic term for mirrorless.  He stats that Sony has micro four thirds cameras as well.

"Earlier this month, Bloom- berg reported that Sony's market share in Japan has doubled after its foray into the Micro Four Thirds market with the Sony Nex series."

He might have been referencing Sony NEX and Samsung have large lenses for the body size.  I think the m43 75-300mm is the same size if not smaller and lighter than a 90mm M.

Just what we need...another new sensor size.
then its time the arcane custom of putting 35mm numbers on crop system lens is stopped once and for all.
I'm a photographer not a mathematician!! Quick!, in less than 3 seconds!, what does 18-250mm come to in a Canon 1.6 crop sensor? How bout 50-150? See?...
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

I agree.

But I also see this as an indication that Panasonic is feeling the heat from the large (er) sensor cameras. Compact P&S is bread and butter for camera manufacturers.

Well, before digital, and FX,DX, etc in sensor sizes, there was different film formats... 6x6, 645, 6x7,(9), 35mm,..... We still had to still figure out "equivalents".  That hasn't changed.

You get to know your equipment and don't worry about other formats that you don't use.

without the 35mm equiv the  f numbers on the lens lose all meaning

my fujinon x100s fixed lens is ............................................................................................ 23mm

the nikon kit zoom for the 1 system is..................................................................................10mm-30mm

my oly m 43 kit zoom  is   ...................................................................................................14mm-42mm

my zoom lens in pentax 110mount is ...................................................................................20mm-40mm

the very fast zoom  f1.8-2.4  on my samsung tl500[asa the ex-1]........................................... 5.2mm-15.6mm

my prime on my nikon d 80 is ...............................................................................................85 mm 1.8

instead of guessing a sensor crop\size and applying a little mental arithmatic why  not have 35mm equivilancies ?
they make sense  even for the novice to not have to know the fovs for 6 or so different sizes as they relate to focal length numbers
having no standardized way of quickly visualizing a fov is a problem thats unnessary and burdensome, having a single reference point for our minds to visualize something is surely preferable to having nothing.....or 6 :o

Yes, my post was in the wrong area, so, the last line is not mine in the reply  ::)  EDIT: Fixed....

But, having A "standard" to compare to works with the way our mind work.  Since 35mm is the defacto standard, that is what is used.

Really though, a 1.5 or 1.6 can use the 1.5 factor (close enough).
So we have....

1.5x, 2x for 95% of the interchangeable cameras.
And full frame camera's need no conversion.

i consider 1.5 or 1.6 close unuf too , to consider them the "same"

the way i convert in my mind is this:   take an apsc focal length , say its 50mm , cut it in half,.... thats 25mm....... add em together
thats 75mm
