Nikon J1 wasn't as bad as I thought
« on: December 02, 2011, 08:07:00 PM »
I tested one out in Target today. I'm a bit more impressed than I was when I tried one out before. The only things that still bother me are the amount of menu diving to change things even down to the mode you're in. The camera handles excellently though and takes some great photos.

the menu diving is one of the biggest mistakes Nikon has made in the launch of a major new product or system it would be forgivable in the v1 but mot in the j1
whose magnesium body and excellent built in evf deserve better

Played with a J1 in a store. It seemed decent enough. Sure focused quickly. The gripes I have is how slick the camera is to hold on to and it felt kind of cheap. Don't think it felt as solid as my Olympus EP-L1 and thats not the best built camera out there.

The V1 I don't understand at all. The naming between the two cameras is confusing. Haven't seen the V1 in person but it doesn't appear as sleek and nice looking as J1. Metal body and builtin finder seem aimd at advanced market, but they made everything menu driven. What were they thinking? Maybe left room for a more upscale 1 in the future? Bunch of different cameras named 1 can sure get confusing fast.

I wish them well. The camera has taken a lot of heat from die hard Nikon users and reviewers. The Pentax Q is in the same boat. People need to give the new camera ideas a chance. Every thing isn't going to be a 10 fps FF camera. The more types of cameras consumers have to choose from the better.
thanks
