Nex and legacy lenses ?
« on: June 12, 2011, 10:47:38 AM »
As with the news about the NEX camera's getting a new firmware update enabling them to focus-peak I'm beginnen to develop an interest for the Nex's but I do wonder about its legacy lens compatibility as on the Panasonic G1 I can mount all sorts of legacy lenses without any glass additions between lens and body which to me is very desirable in a system to be able to maintain the lens original optical quality.

I realize I can scoop it out via google but I'd rather avoid the hassle and all the reading and hear it from the people over here as I'm sure you guys can easily provide an answer to this.

Thx in advance!

I only use E-Mount lenses on my NEX (although that might rapidly change soon since the A-Mount 85mm ƒ2.8 & adapter is a combined total of less than $400 USD!)

Anyways, here's some stuff for you....

Thanks for the link but it says very little more than the possibility to mount an Elmarit lens but I have a lot of old glass over here and the thing is using them on the Panasonic G1 with a glassless adapter (as is common with M4/3) will give me more quality than using these lenses on whichever camera but with extra glass between lens and camera. I'm sure without glass the Nex 50% bigger sensor will provide me with more quality than I currently have and allthough its annoying to have to get all those adapters again for Nex I wouldnt mind so much as long as I get this focus-peak possibility.

Okay, I did read about it allready and it seems to me I can use Canon FD lenses with a glassless adapter while also having the ability to focus to infinity and thats a very good thing really :)

Quote from: dpreview.com
The big news, beyond the NEX-C3's reduced size, is the inclusion of a 16MP sensor. This isn't exactly the same sensor used to such great effect in the Sony A55 (amongst others), but a re-engineered version designed to offer improved power consumption, with the promise of lower image noise and improved temperature characteristics as a result.

The inclusion of what's likely to be a more capable sensor isn't a feat to be belittled but, beyond this, the changes are minimal. There are changes to the user interface - the addition of a distinctly Olympus-style outcome-orientated simple shooting mode is the most obvious revision. There's a touch more user customization available to shooters in the more user-controlled modes and, almost inevitably, a selection of fun image processing filters (another feature it's hard not to associate with Olympus).

Any samples yet?

This is very impressive for any camera with any kit lens by the way : ***originally I posted an url to a specific picture at the NEX-C3 gallery at dpreview.com but there was an expire tag on the picture's url...***

DPR samples are all ISO 200 and some of them seem overexposed

I cant see whats on the link

That is because dpreview puts an expire - timestamp on their pictures, smart anti-hotlinking but very annoying as well for passing links to the photo's...

It was the photo with the bird on the rope between the boat and the harbor and yes a few samples seem prone to overexposure but that is where the photographer perhaps should have underexposed a few thirds of a stop, I know I do when things get to lit but aside from low or high ISO the photo of the bird on the rope is really impressive, for a 18-55 kitlens and for the kind of camera it is. Had the bird been about 2/3's bigger in the frame it could have left a usable crop and that is quite an achievement considering.

Well, its as allready been discussed some days ago, Raw is better but very good and crispy jpegs are just that as well, says enough about the processing unit and there is no software yet able to hide it when a sensor isnt completely up to the task.

Anyway, I took the plunge and ordered a Nex 3 after examining various full size samples from different sources. The C3 might be great or in fact 'greater' than its older brethren 3 and 5 but those allready stood the test of photography and the upcoming firmware gives it the same peak focus capabilities.

Cheerio!

Thanks man, appreciate the effort and the info but I stopped AF shooting for quite a while now. I dont care much anymore for autofocus other than for birds in flight, in fact since I started using manual lenses I also started selling all my AF lenses (even the Pana kitlens i.e. 14-45) as nothing gave me greater satisfaction than shooting manual. And since I will be finally able to use the 50mm f/1.4 and the f1.2 projection lens, that are still hiding somewhere in my closet, and get the shallow DOF I want the NEX will be all I need really. I fear for the Pana G1 as of now because though it has its charmes en strengths I dont think it will come out of its bag once the NEX arrives. The thing I didnt knew up to now was the NEX's are able to burst 7fps! incredible albeit without AF but hey...pompompom...I do the AF'n myself anyway :)

Thx again!
