Hmmm: that tells the sensor format!

A 14mm is the equivalent of a 40mm lens in 35mm equivalency: 2.86 conversion factor. That gives us...

8.4mm x 12.6 mm if it is a 3:2 format sensor, or 105.84 sq mm.

4/3 is what, 13.5mm x 17.3mm? That is 233.6 sq mm, or more than twice the area.

This is not an alternative to 4/3, just as 4/3 is not an alternative to full frame and full frame is not an alternative to MF (etc etc).

It is, however, a clear delineation for Nikon's product line: it will not cannibalize DSLR sales. It is larger than the Fuji x10 sensor (2/3), which is 8.8 x 6.6mm for 58.1 sq mm.

So: 2/3 sensor (Fuji X10) is to the new Nikon sensor as the new Nikon sensor is to 4/3 as 4/3 is to FF. Sorta kinda. :-)

Speculation: Nikon sees this sensor size as a sweet spot for a very compact system with some very, very interesting optics. 90 f1.2? Sweet. 10-100 would be roughly 24-300, which is fairly awesome. Don't understand the point of the 2 macros, though: a 20 f3.5 macro with 1:1 would make more sense, systems-wise. But hey, that's just me... :-)

This gives them a camera to appeal to those moving from basic P&S without having to go the expense of either APS-C (cannibalizing sales of DSLR, their bread and butter) or a new format at or around 4/3. They can make their cameras smaller and lighter than 4/3, which will help them fight the marketing battle). This addresses, of course, the market segment that Panasonic has been enormously successful in (and, to a lesser degree, Olympus), with the hope that this new sensor size is close enough to 4/3 quality that people will want it.

It's the same approach, basically, that Pentax took with the Q, but the Q is smaller (2/3 sensor format). But like I said: this Nikon could be to 4/3 what 4/3 is to FF...

I think there is a typo in the chart: that's surely a 10-150 lens, or the marking of that lens out to 300 is wrong.
E510, E30 and EP1, GF2| 14-42, 40-150, 35, 50, 12-60, 70-300|legacy: Nikon 85 f2, 200 f4; Olympus Zuiko 50 f1.4 and 180 f2.8; Leica 100 f4 macro w/bellows, 180 f3.4 Telyt-R APO, 400 f6.8 Telyt-R "Trombone", Sigma 600 f8 mirror, Vivitar Series One 200 f3|m4/3:14, 14-42, 17

Good summery of strategy... Only, there are 2 macros... no 20mm. but, a 115mm, and  170mm fov...
and the 10-105 = 28-300 FAST ZOOM f/2.8 at 28mm fov
and the 10-100 = 28-280 Slow Zoom f/3.5 at 28mm fov
at a 2.86x factor....

after reading this, it makes a lot of sense for a sensor 1/2 of a 4/3 and 2x a 2/3 sensor... that means a camera that could do ISO 800 without much noise quite yet.. a big difference from typical p/s sensors that can't do over 200 ISO without horrible noise smearing, or weird looking pixels from the noise filtering.

These lenses are going to be incredibly slow when converted though. They may sound great, especially the f/1.2 prime, but in reality that's just an f/1.8.

Not in light gathering, it will still be an f/1.2, but in DOF it will be like f/1.8 on an m4/3.... just as f/2 for a m4/3 is f/2 in light gathering, but f/4 in DOF compared to FF cameras...

Yes, I know larger sensors "Collect" light faster, than a smaller sensor... BUT they "Collect" faster because of larger photo-sites... has nothing to do with the lens f/stop used.

but 105 x 2.86 =300.3 so maybe the faster superzoom is correctly  mentioned?
