Leica Rumer: 2 new bodies
« on: January 24, 2012, 09:32:30 AM »
M10 and a Mirrorless that may have an R mount!

Snip>
The new camera system is expected to be different from the current offerings from other manufacturers. It seems that Leica has decided on an EVF, but this will depend on the type of sensor they will choose. Expect the new camera to be compatible with Leica R lenses.

The m9 is becoming kinda dated really fast. Leica needs to step it up.
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

Didn't these cameras used to be decades apart?

That's the problem with paying $5K on a Leica body that you know will be outdated in 2 years.  It's not like investing in a lifelong camera when it was film days.  Leica needs to develop a modular system like the Ricoh GXR, but have everything still fit in the signature Leica body.  Make it easy to swap out sensors and processors, but keep the same body.  Sort of like a PC, except better.

A G3 with an R mount and some Leica "special sauce". . .$3K ;D

. . .gotta love that Leica glass though. There is a bit of a "run" on Summilux R lenses because all the filmmakers want them.

Not decades, but years in between anyway

M3 in 1954,  + Various modifications (The Classic Forever)
M2 was introduced in 1958, + Various modifications
M4 in 1967, Watzlar
M5 1971,
CL 1973 Also a Duel Leica/Minolta Branded version
M4-2 1978 Canadian (RF was changed to Replace instead of fix unit)
CLE Minolta M mount 1980
M6 Classic 1984
M6 .85 VF 1998
M6 TTL 1998 (TTL Flash)
M7 2002 (added "A" mode)
MP 2003 (MP's were pure mechanical RF built to an even higher Build!)
MP 3 2006
M8 (1st Leica Digital 1.3x) 2006 (Epson/Cosina R-D1 was the 1st Digital M RF with a 1.5x sensor, 2005)
M9 (1st Digital FF) 2009

with many variations of most models in VF and other updates.

Looks like the digital revolution has sped things up, either way.

Leica should have stayed out of the digital grind in the first place. People are expecting their investment not to disappear as fast as digital cameras get outdated and loose their value, but that does not seem to be possible in the digital domain at all. Although they load the finest technology at the time of manufacture, it is totally outdated in five years. Medium format seems to hold it for a while more, but that's not exactly the Leica that we are talking about, is it?

It could be argued that they don't exactly use the finest technology either. In most aspects, the M9 sensor pales in comparison to the sensor in the Nikon D3s, which came out around the same time.
