The old nikon one is almost a stop faster, and covers twice the diagonal sensor size though!  Wonder how much that thing costs now days...

edit... looks like ~$2000...  Also they might have about the same imaging circle, since it appears to make a full circle on a full frame camera... oops!

Yeah, I knew it had a larger image circle.... But, yes, a full stop would add some girth.
I was amazed how far optical formulas have come... in those days, the types of exotic glass was slimmer.

I guess it has more to do the amount of elements needed to make it back then. Today, with all kinds of exotic glass used, both real and advanced plastics (ASPH, ED etc), the lenses have gotten smaller across the board.

But, that lens hasn't shrunk much in the Ai-S version... F/2.8 is one factor.  and I think that lens is a specialty lens by design.

Basically it's not only the lens speed that defines the size. The registration (flange-back) distance matters too, for example the 7.5mm F/5.6 was twice smaller, as it protruded deep back in the mirror box:

It protrudes almost to the shutter itself, but when mounted on the camera, the whole thing becomes much smaller:

The external viewfinder is necessary because the camera's mirror is locked up.
