Clickity Clack shutter fail
« on: April 24, 2011, 02:50:22 PM »
I was just watching the Heritage Open Golf Tournament and Luke Donald got upset at the photographer because the shutter was loud during his back swing.  I'm sure it affected his shot some.  That's another thing I like about Olympus cameras, the shutter is so much softer than NiCanons.  Sure, your not getting 9-11fps, but you don't have worry about getting banned from working at the event either for causing too much distraction.

Definitely. The little click the E-P1 makes isn't noticeable by really anyone.

I wish we could turn of the sound... but, seeing it is a mechanical shutter, I guess not...
But a silent mode would be great!

How far away are the photographers? Aren't they put not so close to the golfer? like 100+ feet away? Which should be far enough away to not be a concern.

I don't know exactly how far away they are, but you could hear the shutter over the TV real loud.  It does brink up an interesting point.  I'm sure the photographer wanted a full swing sequence because they like to analyze shots in the golf magazines.  Especially this shot since it was sudden death hole for the win.  It's something to consider, faster fps, or quieter shutter?  I'm guessing the faster the fps, the stiffer and more durable the shutter has to be, which is why it is louder.  In this case the faster fps probably got that photog fired for next tournament.

I dont know whats wrong with me, but I think m4/3s are way louder than any other DSLR.
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

The most silent shutter/mirror combination I have ever heard was in Pentax K-5. Both are damped very well and the FPS was still impressive (I don't recall how many exactly).

Doesn't the K-5 have 7fps?

Most probably yes, I am too lazy to check now.

Never used one. Sensor 1/4 of the FF would probably mean the mirror is 1/4 the size of the mirror in FF.

Neither have I....
But it appears to me that amongst Olympus owners, there is somewhat of a divide between 4/3'ds owners and ยต4/3'ds owners... :)

To clarify, it's more the mirror sound than the shutter itself that is the noisy part. Shoot in live view of a decent implementation and it's no worse than mirrorless. The 7D in live view is possibly quieter than the E-P1, as it uses electronic 1st curtain by default so there is less curtain movement than on the E-P1.

I used to have an E-510 and I couldn't say its sound was much different than any DSLR I've used. Well, except possibly the 5D, but not because of loudness, more the tone of the sound. It felt more like a slow "ker-chunk" than the "ra-tat" of the mid range Canons.
Cameras big and small: Sony HX9V, Olympus E-P1, Canon 300D (IR mod), 7D and many others!

I like the sound of the e-p1, its more like having a pro camera than on those compacts. My dp1 is hardly even noticable, so silent against the e-p1.
cheers

I would tend to agree, though I haven't used many DSLRs to compare against. I find the E-P1 puts out a pretty hefty shutter clank for a "mirrorless" device. I figured it was due to all the extra movement required by the PEN's shutter:

(1) First, the shutter must close prior to exposure.
(2) The shutter then opens and closes for the shot.
(3) The shutter opens again to restore live view.

I'm guessing the noise from the extra shutter close-open cycle nearly equals that of the mirror slap of a normal DSLR.

My Nikon N90s is at least 5x louder than my E-P1 in continuous shooting mode.  Maybe because it's old and beat up.  I'm sure newer pro-models are quieter.  My friends D7000 was scary loud, I would jump after the shutter click because it startled me until I got used it again.  I couldn't take candid photos of any good quality without having the fake look at me I'm happy smiles.  No James Dean emo poses using that camera that day.  Haven't tried a D3s to compare.

My RFs are quite quiet as they have cloth shutters, not metal. No series shooting possible however.

I'm not sure, haven't tried out the M9.  That's the first model with continuous shooting mode, but it only does 2fps.

Sheesh, those DSLRs sound like sewing machines... And the D3s "quiet" mode simply slows the shutter down. What a marketing spin!

You should hear my Pentax K-x's shutter. Sounds like a bomb dropping every time I take a photo.

Quiet mode on D3 sounds exactly the same, it just slows down

It should be with a leaf shutter.  I forget, does the X100 have sensor shutter also, or a double leaf shutter like some of the old Leaf Shutter lenses have in Fixed lens 35mm like one of the early Contaflex's

EDIT:

It only has a Leaf shutter/f/stop design, no sensor shutter.
