Canon patents a mirrorless lens

APS-C. Uhoh. What do you think this will do to other mirrorless cameras?

If they handle their cards right and don't get scared of hurting their DSLR sales, I can totally see them having the dominating mirrorless system in a few years.

One thing they should do is leave the door open for future full frame bodies and lenses, like with the EF/EF-S system (or Nikon's FX/DX), and make all lenses compatible will all bodies (with or without cropping). They should realize that mirrorless is the future, not just for amateurs.

Canon doesn't seem to think much of the mirrorless market, so it'll probably be an entry level cam.
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

Even if the first offerings are entry level, there's nothing keeping them from adding more advanced bodies/lenses in the future if the system is successful. The fact that they're working around an APS-C sensor instead of something smaller at least shows a bit more awareness (or maybe just less fear of hurting DSLR sales) than Nikon.

Canon would have to introduce a new mount, the EF system is far too large to be adapted (not to mention the flange back distance requiring a monster adapter).

Canon are very strong in marketing. A new lens mount is however required if they want it to be compact. If it could be adapted with all AЕ/AF features, the EF system will offer a huge selection of glass. I imagine something like the new G1X body and a collapsible kit lens, a new mount, similar, but smaller than EF, that could adapt all glass...could be a dream.

This is sure going to piss off Canon DSLR users though.

Canon pissed a ton fans when they went from FD to EOS.... ALL, (pause), ALL the FD lenses had a shallower Register, so, a magnified adapter was need to let them INF focus.  And the ones there..Suck in IQ.

They have to KEEP the EOS mount, and make it a APS-C camera, (As Pentax did).

They are not going to develop a new glass line for a Mirror-Less. They will the EOS line, if they are smart.

There would be absolutely no size advantage. The EF mount has the largest flange back distance of any current camera, because it was designed for full frame. The only way Pentax got around the issue was making a much thicker camera.

EF mount was probably the most innovative thing Canon ever did, it didn't make anyone with a Canon FD system happy but it was innovative. I've been reading for years about all of the patents that Canon owns and their superior technology(Kodak owned a lot of patents too), yet they (canon) don't seem to play catch-up very well. The entire 5d-HDSLR thing was a fluke, they admit there was never a strategy behind it. It sounds cynical but I believe the only reason Canon will get into a mirrorless system is because the profit margin on mirrorless designs is better. I don't think they will introduce another lens mount either.

considering how much went into the ef mount I dont think they will do a new one either.
Thats a whole nother thing, the APS C division of canon and arguably nikon seems, even after all these years, an afterthought. think about it...there is NO equivalent 70-200 in canon, nikon or sony OR pentax (who doesnt even have a full frame). Theres  no  85 equivalent ( what the hell are you gonna do with 127.5 mm?). 24mm becomes 38.5 in canon aps c and 35 becomes 56. So canon APS C shooters are stuck with oddball focal lengths for the most part, with a once or twice exception like the sigma 50-150 (which still isnt 70-200).
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

If they are smart, they will introduce a new mount. EF was built around the mirror, there is no point in keeping that in mirrorless. Pentax kept it, but I'm not surprised - they are dead without the fanboys, sorry, the loyal user base. Nikon did a semi-wise thing in that respect, but did not dare make the One system as good as DSLRs.
Lisandra, you have a point. The only comparable zoom is 50-135 by pentax, and of course the monster 35-100/2 by Oly. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If they plan to design a mirrorless EOS body, then they wouldn't really need to design a new "mirrorless" lens for it, they could just use the existing EF lenses. The Pentax K-01 is... cute, but it's totally pointless IMO, since it wouldn't have been much bigger with a mirror + pentaprism.
