Canon G1X Large Sensor P/S -- 1.5" sensor
« on: January 09, 2012, 11:13:51 AM »
Canon G1X

Replaces the G12

The sensor is sized between m4/3 and APS-C
Snip from B&H Overview page

Canon 1.5" 14.3Mp High-Sensitivity CMOS Sensor
Canon engineers developed a sensor for the PowerShot G1 X digital camera that is nearly the size of an EOS DSLR camera's APS-C sized sensor, and built with a similar pixel structure - each pixel site is larger, allowing more light to be captured - giving the PowerShot G1 X a completely different level of image quality than compact cameras that have come before it. At 1.5", the sensor is approximately 6.3 times larger than that of the PowerShot G12 digital camera. This heightened degree of sensitivity, along with 14.3Mp, delivers several distinct advantages. Noise is dramatically reduced at high ISO speeds for clear low-light and nighttime shooting. Resolution at low ISO speeds is incredibly rich and precise. And, most atypically for a compact camera, the PowerShot G1 X digital camera allows you to create the intensely beautiful background blur that is the hallmark of DSLR cameras

14.3mp
28-112 zoom
T/S LCD
12800 ISO
1080 Full HD

No price set.. Not on Canon USA site yet  ???, But yet B&H has a Product ordering page up.

Comparing sensor size, it's closer to micro 4/3 than to APS-C

18.7 x 14.0 mm - Canon G1X

17.3 x 13.0 mm - m4/3

23.5 x 15.6 - APS-C

(NOTE - these dimensions were all taken from the DPreview site)

Aspect is 4/3s...
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

Maybe this is canon's response to the mirror less camera movement... Looks good, but the lens is pretty slow.  I'm curious to see high iso results, though.

The B&H description actually mentions m4/3rds...

Isn't this close to the size of the GH2 for keeping the full MP for any Aspect Ratio?

So, it IS a m4/3 sized sensor in realistic terms.
So, this is Canon's offering for a "M4/3" sensor camera, w/o entering the real m4/3 market place with lenses and bodies.

The lens should have been f/2.5-4 IMO, to keep the size reasonably sized to the body.

Price guess's anyone?

What a terrible idea. There's nothing they can do with that.

I believe it isn't as bad as you imagine. Remember what the original E-P1 is capable of, this should do more in High-ISO mode, but it is still too ugly to compete with E-Px/GFx/X10. At least Canon Gxx users will get a larger sensor in this overpriced segment.

They're targeting the same people as with the previous G-series cameras, and if they can keep the price in a similar range, I don't see why this wouldn't be a huge hit. It'll probably be on the expensive side though.

Don't write it off yet people, it has a brand new sensor slightly bigger than the gh2, with 4 million pixels less and digic 5, high ISO performance should be something to behold. The lens range and aperture sucks profoundly, but already.Canon fanboys are saying this is the death of m4/3s and acting like its the second coming of jebus

Um, the lens is stuck in the body and they're charging more than a Rebel?

This is hilarious. Canon managed to find a way to make a mirrorless m43 camera without calling it m43. Next you will see this sensor showing up in their interchangeable-lens digital-cinema camera they will call the "C100".

when i first saw this ugly cyclopsian beast with the slow lens and unusual bulk i can not help but  think that when canikon tries to do  this type of camera they always seem to screw it up ,

in fact the only enthusiast compact [lol this is a compact???] from canikon i have ever respected is the s90\ 95 the tiny little bundle with great iq and biggish sensor

these larger cameras like the nikon 7000 and this bulked up g12 successor are dead on arrival imho , they fail to comprehend the reason for cameras of this form factor or the potential speed that can be achieved  is smaller cameras .... if canon  wants to explore other sensor sizes or copy the successful formula of m43  which seems likely here, then surprise me with a a lens formula that does not  approach uselessness  at its long end

More than $500 is a robbery. Well, anything more than the cheapest m4/3 kit is actually a robbery.

The crappy lens does make it a joke. Still, you gotta go read the reactions at the different sites, its hilarious, people actually thanking Canon for making their dreams come true. How much you wanna bet this thing is a success?

And who would buy it if it is more expensive than the cheapest Rebel kit, and than an E-PLx kit? Ah, sorry, it seems more expensive than both kits COMBINED....

Probably.

I have to admit I was a long-time Canon G user, I had a 9, 10 and 11.  I didn't want to carry DSLR gear when I went on jobs with loads of other equipment to keep track of. Once I tried the E-P1 I saw how redundant the G's were. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then and obviously Canon finally roused from their deep slumber to see that the market for the G concept has pretty much gone somewhere else (except for the most diehard Canon fanboys).

But it does seem a little cynical (or maybe just cheap) that they didn't just throw a FF or true APSc sensor in the damn thing, that might have been a little more impressive, particularly getting a lens in the package.

Your post made me click on the links by M5. Now, I see much less noise, but no fine detail in the Canon shot. Sorry. There just isn't any. Although the Pany image isn't focused precisely.

No, really, look at the hat of the man on the 1000 banknote. The Canon image is so smashed by NR and then sharpened that the texture is not almost not recognizable any more.
