Hard to imagine this thing was $3,500 when it was announced over 10 years ago.

I Had One !!!!!!!
than I bought a Xti for an update after it had been out for a year.  I paid $300 for it,

Oh wait, I had the D60 (6mp)... the D30 was 3mp... I bet the noise at ISO 200 was "NONE" 3mp on a APS_C sensor.....I know the NR tech was very young, but still...

The Contax D was also around this price... but it suffered from a lack of sales.

Ah yes, the famed Contax N Digital, the very first Full Frame DSLR camera.

It was also the first FF DSLR to be withdrawn from market. It is also believed that because of that model's marketing failure, Kyocera withdrew from the digital camera market a couple of years later.

Probably due to the fact that most shooters were canon or nikon as a profession. Since it was so much money. And there was a lot of investments already in nikon glass or cannon glass.

I still have a Canon D60 around here somewhere. You sure can't judge the quality of an image with that lcd. Still shoot it once in a while. Love my Olmpus E1 much more (though the screen is also terrible).
thanks

The D60 used a CCD sensor, right? I think the Rebel had the first CMOS.

The D60 has a cmos sensor

Hmm if dpreview is correct, both of them have cmos sensors.

I have both of them btw.

The D60 has great low ISO IQ...
I think the D60 was a game changer for Canon Consumer cameras. it offered 6mp,  a big jump from the 3mp D30.

The CMOS sensor was huge plus over CCD sensors. The 10D was next DSLR offered and started a new direction in the Canon line-up. Same basic body, the internals where the big change...

Kinda how the  "T" series was the testing grounds for the EOS electronics. (safe the mount).
The 30/60 D solidified the DSLR refinements for the next series.. Which is now up to the 60D as far as the mid level consumer lines.

The D60 feels so much faster in use than the D30. The workflow of the D60 is so much better than the D30. That doesn't mean that the D30 is a bad camera, in the contrary. I use it, just to know how far we are now.

No intent to defame the D30, it was a decent camera for what was availible.
Just that the D60 made a huge leap in internal advances that became a spring board for latter models.

You can get an EX grade D30 from KEH for $115!

I owned a Canon 10D for awhile, what an excellent performer with stunning files...especially reds.
