Bought a NEX on saturday , sold it 3 days later.
« on: November 15, 2011, 12:45:19 PM »
On saturday I bought the Sony NEX 5 with 16mm pancake lens.
I had to know how an ASP-C sensor performs.
A real bargain : Payed only 299 EUROS , with 8gb SDHC card and a camera bag (value 40 euros).
After more then 4 hours of  battery charging, I took my first pictures.
A-priority mode. I took most shots wide open. It was already rather dark.
Then I put the pictures on my computer.
Ahh help !!! Disapointment all over.
Still a lot of noise and very very soft. No sharpness at all. Looked like a P&S. What a shitty lens !
And I didn't like jpg colors.

Today I sold the camera.
I lost 50 euros, but I have learned alot. I'm glad I have had this experience.

1) NEX is also noisy.
2) The lens is the most important part of the camera. Oh I love my 20mm more then ever :)
3) I need a cam that looks cool and solid. The NEX is a toy, the E-P1 is a real man's camera ! I feel confident with the PEN !
4) Jpg-output of the PEN is brilliant ! I'm a jpeg shooter
5) Ibis on Olympus is great.

Now I know. Olympus PEN forever. The next cam will be the E-P3 !

Look at the stones and walls of this picture. ISO 800 ! Noise, Noise ,Noise

I think everyone on here who has used the NEX and went back to Micro Four Thirds has had the same experience. Despite the fact that the cameras have much better features, the system is just not better overall.

The NEX in't a bad camera. It just needs better lenses and IS.
Like verybody said.
I had to experience this myself.

I had the same experience with the NEX3 last year.  I liked many things about the camera but the shadow detail was terrible and the colors never seemed quite right.  I left a post about it here somewhere.  I was able to send the camera back for a full refund and then bought the E-PL1 which I love with the 20mm Panny f1.7 lens.

Is it really possible to know a camera in three days?

What a shitty lens !

I wonder what the reaction would be if this statement were made about a Micro Four Thirds product?

I think the oly 17 mm is horrible...
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

I'm always honest.
The  Sony 14mm on the NEX 5 is really really soft !
It should perform better on the next models C3 and NEX5N.

if by day 3 you haven't liked the camera enough and think its crap, I doubt things will improve much in a whole year...

I did side by side shots of familiar subjects outdoors shooting familiar subjects in very bright sunlight and also some sunset stuff along side a Canon S95 and my trusty Nikon D90.   I wanted to like the camera but the shadow thing really bothered me so I moved on.  As much of an instinctual choice as a logical one, looking back.  No regrets except that I liked the feel of the NEX and the tilt screen a lot, the Pen feels clunky by comparison.  I had to spend $$ to add the VF-2 to my Pen to make up for the loss of the tilt screen.

I think 3 days is enough the see if you could fall in love with a camera or not. In this case I didn't.

I also want to say that I do not think that the camera is crap, on the contrary. The lens is crap, not the body!
There is some fine technology inside the NEX.
With first class lenses this would be a great camera. With the 14mm the NEX isn't better than a good p&s.
My conclusion.Sony make some good an cheap lenses !

IN my opinion it's a very ugly camera. The lens is bigger than the body (height) and that makes the look extremely ugly. With some M39 Leica I/II type lenses it would be a different story.

But on the other hand, I read a lot of stories about this camera and most of them are positive. But that's an inter-subjective matter, not subjective. And subjective counts offcourse when buying and keeping a camera.

I find it only strange that you sell a camera. I never sell one of my cameras. I still have all my cameras from my very first Fujifilm point&click.

I don't drink and I don't smoke, no drugs. Only sex, and that's almost free.  :D :D

I have a company and I build websites so I need to take pictures. And I am a starter so I can get the money of the camera's back from the tax as startup costs.

that 45/1.8 costs here €.254 and I already see sites where the lens costs less. http://www.redcoon.nl/B310845-Olympus-Zuiko-Digital-45mm-18_Vast-Brandpunt?refId=vergelijk

I was just kidding :)
I think the NEX isn't a keeper.
My E-P1 on the contrary will stay with me forever.
That's a good price indeed , thx !

€254 is incl. of sales tax (as is normal when quoting prices in Europe), whereas US$400 is 'net' price, - normally through the US, you'll have to add tax, - 9-10% (?) on top, - so the comparison is between €254 and US$440, I would think? Not often that price difference between Europe and the US comes out in favor of Europe, - normally it's the other way round.  :)

From google : 250 Euros = 337.82500 U.S. dollars.
For once Europe is in favor. The only problem is that the lens is sold out or unavailable.
