'Nikon Moving To Aptina Sensors?'
« on: November 06, 2011, 05:07:41 PM »
Well,
The Nikon J1/V1 (targeted for the casual shooter who wants a bit more) uses the Aptina sensor.  Will we see more Nikons with this sensor?

Or will Aptina allow Olympus use of their sensor ???

I've never heard of Aptina before.

And why's that, if Sony sensors were so capable?

Well, maybe because a competing DSLR maker (Sony) won't sell the latest tech. to Nikon, that would be a conflict of interest IMO.
Just as Panasonic won't sell the new 16mp to Olympus, just the now, discontinued 12mp ones.

This is a good thing, Now Nikon is not restricted to what Sony makes available, and can get advance at better pace in sensor requirements with Non Competing Sensor maker...

That's my take anyway... I am sure there are many other reasons also.

Nikon usually gets the latest stuff from Sony - but it appears that Nikon has to wait 6 months before announcing a product that has the same sensor that Sony uses in a Sony camera.

As a J1 owner,
I'm really impressed with the output from the small sensor from a low light/noise perspective.  In this case, Nikon/Aptina were smart in limiting the size output to only 10mp.

I only imagine what it would look like with a 6MPix sensor....although they wouldn't go below the psychological 10.0 figure

Prior to purchased,
I assumed that anything greater than ISO 800 would be unusable.  I was ready to accept this.

Now after purchasing, I'm pleasantly surprised to find out that ISO 1600 shots are 100% useable 3200 *might* be acceptable for some.

That's good to hear.

What do you usually think is acceptable with your Micro Four Thirds cameras?

Personally,
I don't work with anything higher than 1600 on my E-PL2.  However, I do understand that at least 2 Panasonic models (now 3) are definitely more capable than  my E-PL2  :)

Coincidentally, I just saw a commercial with Ashton Kutcher and the J1.

Now I have no interest in buying it.

Haha!  Who, as a corporation needs to launder, funnel and squander money (cough!... Olympus) when you can simply hire the 2nd most annoying male actor on the planet...? Who?  ;D
