I haven't dug into the specs too much, but will either of these new nikons do anything substantially better than a Panasonic LX5?
u

Yes

1) 10fps speed in autofocus and 60fps in manual mode, courtesy of a unique combination of contrast and focal plane phase detect autofocus.

2) HD: 1920 X 1080/60i
HD: 1920 X 1080/30p
HD: 1280 x 720/60p
Slow-motion: 640x240/400fps

video specs are nice

On paper. Whatever a .mov wrapped "H.264/MPEG-4 advance video coding" means.

I played around with these cameras today.  The 30-110mm lens is smaller than the 45-150mm m43 lenses by a noticeable amount when expanded.  And they don't look as bulky in reality vs. the pictures.  The camera and lenses are all very well built.  Menu system is simple.  It's basically an upgrade for people looking for more flexibility than a bridge camera or point-n-shoot.  I think it will sell well because most upgraders don't know or care about the difference in 1.5x, 2x, or 2.7x crop.  They will see Nikon brand and a solid looking camera next to other bridge and mirrorless cameras on the shelf  and probably take it home.  Nikon does have a hard time justifying their entry level APS-C dslrs now.  Things like live view lag when shooting continuous will never go noticed by point-n-shoot upgraders.  The guy at the store didn't even know what I was talking about until I showed him, and this is a nikon pro specialty camera shop, not best buy.  Honestly, if I had a choice between a Nikon V1 and D5000, I'll take the V1.

It's freaking  900$!! I can't believe how much hell was given to the gh2 for costing exactly that or the ep3 for having some noise at ISO 3200 but somehow this camera is not bad.
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...
